Insurance won't pay

I just called my insurance to see if they will pay for orthotics to help my knees and they won't cover that unless I have surgery so I guess I am just going to have to live with the pain in my knees with a smile. So I am going to go back to workingout as soon as this nasty cold is gone!

Insurance companies are crazy! They won't pay for $100 orthotics, but they'll pay for more expensive, invasive surgery? Are you sure you can't get around it? Maybe with a doctor's prescription? Does your work have a "cafeteria plan," where you can set aside a certain amount of before-tax pay each month, that you can use to pay for things like glasses or massages or orthotics, or other things that insurance might not cover?

Kathryn, I have had three pairs of custom orthotics in 10 years. Insurance would never pay. The first pair cost $250, the second $425 and the third $400!

Leslie, call a podiatrist or orthapedist and ask about a payment plan.

You might also try-over-the-counter orthotics. You can check them out at http://www.roadrunnersports.com. Some of them are quite good and the folks at roadrunner are well-trained to help get you intot he best product for you. How are your workout shoes. Great shoes are the most important aspect of injury prvention when it comes to working out! Good luck and hang in there!

I am a stay at home mom the insurance plan is through my hubbys work. and I can't afford anything but knee braces that I got at wal-mart. I have a prescription but they still won't pay for the orthotics. and my knees are killing me when I walk up and down stairs and sit. You are right they rather shell out the big bucks for surgery than for something that can save them money just like Birth Control pills, they don't make sense at all.

Kathryn,
Like Bobbi says, take it into your own hands. Set up a savings plan and buy the d@mn things. That is what money is for, for you and your life! Then enjoy the heck out of them and advise others to do what you did!

Just save a little each month and put the money in a concrete place labeled orthotics, whether it's a separate account or a jar somewhere. I have done this and it works.
