Input please, so confused....

My father came to visit me and it was a nice visit. But when he was here, he swatted my butt and called me a "Fat Ass". At first I paid no attention because that's how he is, but it has been eating me up inside...I bought some diet pills, "Relacore" just in hopes that it'd help me gain some control of my body.

I am so confused with everything that is out there.

Especially when it comes to the way people eat and lose weight.

I am going back to using Cathe DVDs full-time,until I can figure some sort of healthy program.

I was using Cathe's DVDs full-time and found myself losing inches and feeling incredible, but my knees were starting to hurt alot, then I started getting bored, and switched to Turbo Jam and Tae-Bo. They are great, My knees got alot better but I started losing my muscle definition and endurance. Now I'm back to where I started with my weight and inches...GRRRRRRR!!!!

So along came Body-for-Life... I just don't see where working out for only 20 min. every other day for cardio and 40 min. every other day for weights can help anyone. And the stuff he suggests you eat, seems so, well, FATTENING... What about the protein bars and shakes, they are soooooo expensive. I have extreme skin allergies to anything with wheat, whole grains, oats ect. So it's hard for my to incorporate fiber. Are protein shakes important in a diet regimen?

I wish someone had a sensible eating plan where they were completely honest about what they ate and didn't advertise their sponser's product.

Wish Cathe had an eating regimen out there to view...

Hi Carrie,

I'm sorry that your feeling down. Try to let go of the "fat ass" statement, it's meaningless.

Do NOT turn to supplements like Relacore. You will most likely end up losing control of your body. There's a good a chance that using crap like that could end up screwing up your system and making it harder for you to meet your goals (I'll try to find some facts to back up that statement).

I'm no diet expert, but I think the most sensible eating plan you could/should try is one that incorporates as many whole foods (unprocessed foods) into your diet as possible. Don't use protein bars or shakes as the basis of your diet. They're highly processed. They're okay for a quick snack once in a while, but I wouldn't use them to regularly replace a meal.

Beachbody has an easy-to-use food guideline called Michi's Ladder. It's basically a chart of different foods ranked in categories based on "cleanness". It might help you to make sensible food choices.

Here's a URL to it: http://www.beachbody.com/jump.jsp?itemType=GATEWAY&itemID=122

Regarding your workouts, are you getting weight training in? The gist of your first post sounds like you might be doing a lot of cardio.

First, throw away the diet pills. They won't do anything for you, except maybe give you the jitters and make you queasy.

Second, it's NOT that hard. Truly.

1. Eat small meals, 5 or 6 times per day
2. Get a good balance of protein, carbs and fat - stay away from processed foods, sugar, too much sodium. Eat lots of lean proteins, fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains.
3. Mix the Turbo Jam and Tae Bo with strength conditioning (weights) so you're not losing your definition - what was it that was hurting your knees? Was it step?
4. DON'T listen to your father or anyone else who demeans you and calls you names

Don't ever hesitate to come here and ask questions and look for support. No question is stupid.:)

I agree with Shelley. I also don't think that protein bars or shakes are a bad thing and they are a part of my diet everyday. The best thing to do is to drink a protein shake immediately after your workout, and I do this ALL the time, and I believe Cathe does the same. She drinks Isopure. Don't listen to anything that is negative from anyone and just remember you can do anything you set your mind to.

Charlotte~~

Don't listen to your dad!

If you truely want control of your body, you need to pitch those diet pills. Those will only hurt your efforts. If they worked, we would not be staring at an obese society!

Listen to Shelley, she said it perfectly! Small, frequent meals, balanced, as whole as possible.

For your workouts, get a nice mix of cardio (taebo so your knees don't hurt) and weights (Cathe is the best). Also incorporate stretching.

A few days of "Shelley's Program" will have you feeling so much better about the entire situation! Start now!

Thank you for the advice. Yes it was the step. I loved it for toning my legs, but it was doing number to my knees.

Again, thank you...

Carrie

Hi Charlotte,

Regarding the protein bars/shakes, I think it depends on where you are with regard to fitness and diet to begin with. You have both your exercise and diet regimen in a very good place, and you're a hard exerciser (with the pics to prove it! :) ). The supplemental shakes make sense for you.

I believe Carrie, on the other hand, is looking for a sensible eating plan. I think focusing on whole foods and clean eating is a good place to start. I've noticed a lot of people in off-line life that glob onto protein bars and shakes as the magic bullet that'll whip them into shape and end up using them too much in their diet, to the detriment of their real nutritional needs. Yes, they can be useful at some point, but not to start with, IMO.

Thank you for the information. I certainly don't want to lose any more control of my body than I already have. I will throw the pills away, except for my vitamins of course. I printed out Michi's Ladder, I think it will help me.

I was searching for more info. on how to interpret the ladder. How do you decide how much of what to eat? Thank you again...

Carrie

:)

Thank you Gayle. You sound like you understand where I'm coming from. You are right. Baby steps are important to me right now. I did go toward the protein bars and shakes one time before and used them too much. I need to start right... and create some essential building blocks for myself as well as my family.

Thanks to everyone here, I feel I will succeed...

Shelley's program, sounds sensible and alot more simple than I thought... No really, it's sounds like it's all common sense, but only after someone's mentioned it. I have got to quit letting all these quick fix advertisments keep tempting me any other way.

Carrie:) :) :)

The ladder is a decent guide for "what" to eat, but not so hot for "how much" :) .

You might check a couple of online food journaling sites, like fitday.com or sparkpeople.com. They have food databases that include portion sizes, calories, fat, etc. It's been a while since I used one, but I think they also have utilities that help you determine your daily caloric intake and stuff like that. They're free.

If you do the journaling, even for just a little while, they can also be a wake-up call as to just how good or bad you might actually be eating. It was when I did it.

If you think about it...Shelleys Program is a "quick fix". If you stick with it...and it becomes easier by the day...the fat disappears and a toned body replaces the fat...and it stays that way. No diet pill, bar or shake can make that claim!! It's not quick if it comes back! Making it a lifestyle and part of your every day routine is the quickest and most permanent way to go about it.

Grab the whole foods. Keep a "nutrition bar" in your purse for an emergency. Eat the bar instead of fast food...just enough to tide you over until your next whole meal.

And not only will you feel better eating all the whole foods and exercising, you will feel so accomplished because you worked for it. You didn't try to rely on diet pills or a "quick fix". YOU took control and made healthy choices and that's something to be very proud of!

Don't you just love it when family members think it's okay to make a comment they wouldn't even make to a total stranger? I agree with all the others that say let it go. I know it's hard... it's happened to me, not about weight, but about other areas of my life.

As far as working out and eating... have you tried lowering your step? When I had mine at 8", my knees also started bothering me. Now that it's at 6", my knees are fine. I've also started incorporating alot of walking into my fitness regime (due to our new dog... which is another thread), which seems to ease me into a Cathe workout when I get home.

I have so much admiration for all the ladies who've shared their fantastic approaches to eating. I'm taking their advice myself, and trying hard to "clean up" my diet, too.:)

Carrie,

You've received great advice and I have none to add, but wanted to cheer you on and say YOU CAN DO IT!! And when you have a bad day, DO NOT beat yourself up, you've done your best, be done with it, move on, tomorrow's a new day.

Do not listen to your father. I've almost always been thin, but the ONE time my life was crazy, I hit 40, and gained weight - my mom was sure to point it out in very sly, demeaning ways. I'm not even sure she realized what she was doing.

And keep coming back here.:)
