Injured & Seeking Recommendations: Light Weights/High Rep WOs?

Cathlete
As mentioned on another thread, I have been trying to recover from a wrist tendonitis issue (deQuervain's tenosynovitis) in my dominant hand, which developed after a weight training injury last March.

It's been a loooong time healing—and it feels like it's been very much a case of two steps forward and one step back. I seem to make some progress, then gradually & carefully try to reintroduce weight training or weight-bearing exercises, and before long, there's a setback. And not necessarily from the exercise itself. Since it's my dominant hand, it's easy to jack it up again through very ordinary activities.

Anyway, I am resigned to the fact that I need to limit my weights. It's been driving me crazy b/c I love weight work, but I know now I probably cannot lift beyond 10 lb. DBs without the risk of hurting myself. I'm hoping some folks might be able to share u/b weight work recommendations.

I dusted off my little-used Squeeze Stronger DVD the other night and am pleased to say I have some pretty killer biceps DOMS two days later, even though I used only 5 lb. DBs. I've also enjoyed Brazil Butt Lift's Sculpt and am encouraged that I am feeling it using such light weights.

Can anyone steer me in the direction of similar workouts so that I can add greater variety? I have Ellen Barrett's Skinny Sculpt and Kelley Coffey-Meyer's 30 Minutes to Fitness: Muscle Definition on the way. I hope they turn out to be good choices!

Thanks in advance if you can help!

Sorry to hear you were injured!!

I like Jillian Michaels's No More Trouble Zones. #3 to #5, 7 circuits of weight training. I use it even though I have carpal tunnel, I just make sure to modify my wrist position on the abs section when planks are involved.

HTH!

Sorry for your injury! I've had my UNfair share the last few months but am thankfully all mended up!

I am LOOOOVING Pure Barre Pershing Square 1 & 2. No weight leg and ab workouts. I have DOMS in my quads and thighs like I have NEVER experienced! And I totally love it! The instructor Carrie is very pleasant to listen to and it is very easy to follow.

I'm curious to try Squeeze Stronger...and Skinny Sculpt...and....oh, I better stop!:p:eek: Let me know what you think of Skinny Sculpt!

Well, of course Jari Love is the light weight high rep queen! You could also try focusing on things like pulses, half reps, holds, slow counts, etc., that add more intensity to light weight reps.

Other Coffey-Meyer videos/lighter weights

RinninTeach,
I hope you will recover quickly, and that you are up to speed in short order.

You mention Kelly Coffey-Meyer. For light weights and lots of reps, I recommend her first DVD, "Complete Cardio Scultping" , You might want to try "NYC: Body Sculpting Workout". With the latter, I would recommend using very light weights.

And speaking of using ligher weights, I recommend just using some of Cathe's earlier DVDs, like "Power Hour" and "Maximun Intensity Strength" . Also, her "Pure Strength Series". I would use very light dumbell weights, and maybe a bodybar instead of a barbell.

Make sure you consult with a doctor or an excercize specialist, concerning your tendonitis problems, to check on the idea of using light weights.

Hi Cathy,

So sorry to hear you are injured. I know that's not fun.

I second Sparrow's recommendation of Jillian Michaels No More Trouble Zones. First time I did the workout I thought the weights she was using were way to light for me so I started out using heavier, I think 8 lbs. It didn't take long before I realized I was being way too ambitious and joined Jillian who was using 5 lbs. It's an all around good, tough workout.

Thank you for your responses, everyone!

Sparrow & Elaine, I actually have that one but only used it once or twice. I will have to break it out more.

Kate, glad to hear you’ve bounced back from your injuries. It’s frustrating, isn’t it? Does the Pure Barre Pershing Square hit the u/b at all? Between the BBLs, Insanity, and SC, I feel my legs are getting worked pretty good, but I am intrigued. Will definitely let you know about Skinny Sculpt.

Morningstar: ooh, yeah. I forgot to mention: Jari is the one instructor I can’t seem to stomach. I still have RTTC and Slim & Lean but had them on a giveaway pile. Maybe under the circumstances I need to give them another chance. I’m desperate! Thanks for the suggestion. I wonder, does she still go on about the percentage of carbs burned in her newer WOs?

Davidj: thank you, I will check out the other KCMs. I have been seeing a specialist for the injury, and although initially, I had to rest it, I did get the green light to reintroduce weights.

Again, thanks so much for the ideas. Much appreciated!
