Infants and Painting...

Cathlete
So we went to do some painting in our house today...

Does anyone know if I should take Joey out of the home until the painting is done and some of the odor has dissapated or is it safe for him to be around while the painting is being done???

I can take him out and DH can paint himself but if I don't have to do that, I'd rather not so that I can help DH.

TIA!:)

Hi, Wendy!

I am not sure about painting with a little one, but is it your whole house you're painting or just one room? Maybe you could just keep the door closed and keep Joey out of the room.

Hi Carla.

It's the kitchen/hallway area only...We have options of rooms to put him in and close the door if we want...What I really should do is make a few phone calls and see if someone can babysit him so that I can help DH and we don't have to worry...Maybe we'll try that first.

Thanks!:)

Wendy -

I hate taking chances with allergies and reactions at such a young age, so we tend to be very cautious. With mine (we've re-done two houses since we've had kids) I've gotten the kids out of the house during the painting and made sure we kept all the windows open until the smell was pretty much gone. (We made sure the weather was going to be good before we started.)

Latex (water clean-up) paint is better than oil based paint. The oil based can be much harder for little noses and eyes to deal with. If you want better info, call your pediatrician and see what the 'official' rec's are.

If anyone in your family(ies) has allergies to smells or chemicals, you probably want to be a little more cautious, but for the most part, a lot of airing out takes care of it.

good luck! (and what color are you painting? )

It may be too late for this, but some paints, like "Glidden Spred 2000" have lower level of VOC (VOlatile organic compounds), which is what is toxic in paint. You can tell right away they are less toxic because they have much less odor and it lasts a shorter time.

I would have Joey out of the room where the painting is done, and preferable in a location where he can't smell it (if you can smell it, it's the VOC outgassing).

I really think Joey should not be around while the paint is drying .and keep the windows open .. Call your Babies Dr and ask them ,the nurse will tell you . That will at least put your mind at ease ..Joeys just such a little guy still .. Hugs to you good mommy with good instincts !!! Always go with YOUR instincts too ,Trust me . Mom of 3 boys here !!(20,17 and 4) Oh my youngest is a Joey too !!:)

Hi ladies.

Thanks for your responses!
I decided to take Joey up to his grandma's house for the night yesterday before we started painting. We will be picking him up later today and by the then the house should smell like roses again. :+
