Happy EARTH Day on Sunday! (Yes, there still is an Earth Day :))

Commit to do just ONE simple change to save the Earth...It's so easy!

* Say no to gas station and ATM receipts
* Use only Green household products such as Method (available at Target)
* Change just one light bulb to an energy saver bulb.
* RECYCLE as much as you can!
* Unplug your toaster when you are not using it.
* Recycle your newspapers...you will save thousands of trees
* Plant a tree!
* Bring your own travel mug to the coffee shop...Starbucks will give you 10 cents off!
* Bring your own water bottle...no more cheap plastic water bottles!
* Turn your heater down just one degree and raise your air conditioner by one degree!
* Recycle gift bags, use ribbons over and over again.
* Use cloth napkins instead of paper.
...AND MANY MORE THINGS TO DO!

GO GREEN!!!! IT IS EASY!!

Nice list!

Here are a few I picked out that I will commit to do:

* Say no to gas station and ATM receipts
* Unplug my toaster when I am not using it (I actually am a good girl and do this already).
* Bring my own travel mug to the coffee shop
* Use cloth napkins instead of paper

and it has amazed me how controversial an Earth Day display could be in a corporate workplace. Who knew!

Let me tell you--I live with my sister in an apartment in Boston and she is intense about recycling, reusing things, etc. She even reuses her ziploc bags--she just washes them and lets them air dry, and voila! :)

But the one good habit I've picked up from her is to UNPLUG anything you're not using. Your hairdryer, toaster, microwave, coffee pot, curling iron, etc. It annoyed the heck out of me when we first moved in together--I would go to use my flat iron and she would've unplugged it the night before. Or I would go to microwave something and it was unplugged! Ugh! But then I saw how low our electric bill was ($27 a month--hello!) and I have been doing it ever since. So not only does this stuff help the earth but it can keep pennies in your pocket too!

*Change to a plant-based diet : animal agriculture is the biggest polluters in the US, and uses as much energy as vehicles.

Wow! Thank God I have been a vegetarian for 17 years! I did not know that - very interesting!!

Dumb question; Unplugging the toaster, my doesn't turn on till you push the lever down or is there something BIG I'm missing here?
TIA.

Not a dumb question. Everything that is plugged in consistently uses 40% of its "normal" output when it is actually turned on. So, your toaster is constantly wasting 40% of its energy just sitting there plugged in. Electricity is constantly being used even though we think things just turn on when we hit the start button.

Environmentally Concerned

Dear Editor,

In a late celebration of Earth Day, I decided to stop doing
everything enviromentally damaging. I arose early, turned on
the light, then realized I couldn't use electricity anymore;
hydro-electric dams destroy scenic waterways, nuclear generates
waste and uses up nonrenewable resources.

I was hungry and was going to fix bacon and eggs and it hit
me; how could I could I be so cruel? Think of poor chickens
and pigs pumped full of drugs, stuffed into trucks and shipped
to slaughter! I got my corn flakes out and realized I couldn't
eat them either as farmers use pesticides and fertilizers that
pollute the land and water, causing erosion and destroying
wildlife habitat at every turn. I grew sicker.

I went upstairs to dress -- my wool shirt? No, think of the
poor sheep sheared, shivering, waiting to die in the cold spring
rains. And what about the poor mothers, stripped of their babies
so that I could eat lamb chops? The wool suit was out, but what
about my polyester, Dacron or Rayon clothes? No way! Made from
petroleum. No off-shore drilling for me! But I was cold so I
reached for my fur-lined coat, then dropped it like it was hot.
Think of all those critters, chewing off their legs, and ranch
raised critters killed with electric prods up their anus.
My down coat? No! Plunked from the backs of dead ducks and geese.
My leather coat? Just the fur coat with no fur on it. So, I would
have to stay naked!

Couldn't drive my car anymore; all those oil covered otters in
Alaska Convinced me of that.

I threw my wedding ring away, thinking of those mountains being dug away for gold. My depression grew! Everything I did caused death, pollution or
consumption. I thought deeply.

Suddenly, a solution occured! An act so enviromentally sound,
so non-consumptive, so giving, came into my mind.

I would walk, naked, into the desert and die. My flesh would
feed the hawk, the magpie, the bobcat, the maggot. What the
critters didn't get would soon melt back into the earth and feed
the plants.

Enviromental renewal! The greatness of the act overwhelmed me.
Yes, I swear upon the altar of my god of my fathers, Charles Darwin,
that I will carry out this deed of superior character.

Note: While trapping coyotes in the desert, I came accross a pile
of bleached bones with this letter in a water protected packet.
I felt this act should be shown to the public. Also, it turned out
to be a great location for catching coyotes, and I was hoping that
this 'person' might inspire others of the 'enviromentally conscious'
to do the same."

** Ok, well it's kind of funny **

I think someone is stereotyping appliances. Toasters, hair dryers, non timered coffee pots etc etc use no power unless you turn them ON. There is no "keep alive" voltage in them. You should unplug them for safety reasons, wouldn't want your cat to start a fire.

The devices that are the culprits on residual electrical usage are the VCRs, DVD Players, stereos, TVs things that have clocks or timers. Battery chargers for battery operated power tools, those unsightly "wall wart" power supplies for cell phones etc. Other culprits are anything that uses a "remote", the device has to monitor for the remote.

Ecological pursuits lose credit quickly when the "pop science" can't live up to the claims.

Reduce, Recycle, Reuse, don't go overboard with the fantastic statistics, you only give the "other side" ammo to counter claim you.

Bill, are you my Republican, ultra conservative father posting in secret!?!? (His name is Bill, too!!) I am surprised you didn't mention that most global warming is caused by volcanic ash(as he says to me daily)...I think Bill's of the world have a conspiracy against me and the Earth!! hahahahha

That was a good one. I am going to send it to my father...unless he already posted it here...hummmmmmmm?

I rank myself as a mild environmentalist but I think the majority of the anti global warming crew are a "bubble off plumb". If you do a wikipedia search on glacial or interglacial peiods you'll discover that we are in the 5th interglacial period. Our planet has cooled and warmed before with our intervention.

Don't get me wrong, we should get better gas mileage and stop polluting but there is no way in "h e double tothpicks" we are going to "stop global warming".

Jennifit, Your father sound like a brilliant man!

I agree with Dave on this issue, we need to pick up after our self, but I’m sure Oklahoma will not become beach front property. I am waxing my surf board just in case.... :)
