IMAX2 - Anyone else...?

Anyone else feel like there is no way on earth they will ever learn the choreography? :( I'm not a big step fan, but have done ok in classes in the past, and liked the idea of the interval style, and I love the Cathe weight workouts (which I learned all about on these boards), and kickboxing for cardio, but I've never felt so uncoordinated in my life as I did today trying to do IMAX2.

Instead of just watching it, I went through the motions (sort of) then would rewind to start an interval again and again to try to get the steps down. I almost fell face first over the step twice, tripped countless times, and was never on the right foot or right side of the step.

I gave up after the 7th interval.

Any advice on how to get the moves down? I have the feeling I might actually like this if I could follow it! Thanks!

Hi JD, here's what works for me. When I first get a new step DVD, I watch it and do it along with Cathe but I do not use my step. That's what I did with HIS 4DS which I found very challenging at first. The routines follow an 8 count beat so that may also help you if you count along. The routines repeat themselves four times (two on each side) or sometimes six (three on each side). Once I have the foot work down, which usually takes me two or three tries, I use my step with one set of risers. I have to keep reminding my self to pick up my feet so my step moves are big. Also keep in mind modification. If you dont like a move, use a modification. For example I dont do too well with the fast feet shuffle moves so I just do a repeater.

I know it can be somewhat frustruating and sometimes you think I'll never get this. But you really will. Good luck.

Thanks Carmen! That's a great idea, I'll try it without the step, I had used 1 riser only like they did in the video, but maybe I'll progress from floor to step with no riser.

My only other thought, is to just pick 1 or 2 sections a day and just try to learn those really well before attempting to really do the video.

Concentrate on learning just the step combos first and don't worry about the blasts. Once you have the step combos down, then start working on the blasts--you'll have your confidence up!

Thanks Janet! Sounds like the key is to start slow with these. Thank goodness I didn't order IMAX3, people here call 3 the hard one! Yikes.

I've made up my mind that it takes me quite a few times to get most of the moves down, so I just catch on little by little. If something is too difficult, but I still want to continue, I just modify and save figuring it out for another day.

It takes most of us what seems like forever to get down the choreography every time we get a new Cathe step dvd so you're not alone. There will come a time when you can do the moves in your sleep and you won't believe you ever had a problem. I think the advice here is good (I'm going to use it in the future). I still don't have IMAX2 but I know Cathe's step style and I can tell you if you've already gotten all the way to interval 7 you're doing way better than average at picking up the moves. I won't mention IMAX3...

Thanks for the vote of confidence! But I just meant I fumbled through interval 7 and just stopped trying anymore at that point!

I gotta think I was somewhere waaaay below average on picking this up. I was like a deer in headlights watching this, I imagine I looked pretty funny though, could have been entertaining for someone ;)

Thank you all for your encouragement, I think if I had not posted and heard from all of you, I would not have even tried to go back to this.

So, after I did my regular cardio today, I figured I would try some of the ideas from this thread.

So I used the step, but with no risers, and cleared out as much space as possible. I used the Chapters menu and went through intervals 1, 2 and 3, three times. And amazingly, I'm starting to get the foot work down!:D I even started to have a little fun.

Don't get me wrong, I'm probably not all that graceful, but hey no one is watching!

So on to 4, 5 and 6 tomorrow :)

Thanks again!!!

You have gotten some great advice. Funny you should mention IMAX2. I was doing Gauntlet today which has parts of IMAX2 in it. While doing it, I was remembering how difficult it was for me at first to do that workout (especially the straddle taps). I remember only doing half the workout (1-5 one day then 6 -10 another). This really helped me in the beginning.

Stick with it and don't get discouraged; the workout is really fun when you get the hang of it. In no time, you will forget all about not getting the moves because you'll become a pro at it. :)

I still can't do the straddle taps, but I will say that I love this workout -- and it will get easier and you will get the moves down -- just keep trying.

It was very frustrating for me when I started and to be honest I still can't do the whole workout -- I generally make it to the sumo squats and I'm flat out DONE - but I clearly remembering feeling like I would never get it and then I also remember when I did it and actually got it!

I have tried Imax 3 twice after just watching it once - while I watched it I thought "Oh, I can do that. . . " famous last words. . . I still can't quite get it. But I will keep trying because it feels so good when I do actually get it! :)

You're doing great! You will become a pro!

It took me a loooong time to learn to do straddle taps but I can do them now. I'm not the most coordinated person so if I can eventually get it, I think anyone can!

It helped me immensely to purchase Cathe's Basic Step DVD and learn the basic patterns. Now that I've been doing Cathe's step workouts for a while I can learn them much quicker than before but introduce me to another instructor (i.e. Amy Bento or Tracey Staehle) and I'm back to looking like Mr. Bean. Be patient. As long as you are moving you a re doing great :)

I am glad it is not just me who has trouble with the straddle steps. I bump into the step a lot. Also, I feel like I am jumping so high on those "genie" hops and look down and I am barely getting off the ground. One last thing, why can't I do those plyo explosive jacks? My inner thighs feel like they are glued together and they hurt!

You'll continue to get the hang of it. I'm pretty uncoordinated, but even I got these eventually! Another thing that I do when I'm learning a new workout is to leave out the arm movements. That way I can better concentrate on what my feet are supposed to be doing.

ETA: The straddle taps were the last thing I couldn't do, but I got them eventually...just hang in there!

I have had a lot of trouble with IMAX3. But each time I do it I get a little better.
