I'm so mad I could spit! (long)

Well, actually, if I tried to spit, it would probably just dribble down my chin!!

Anyway, I just need to vent about something that happened today at work.....thanks for "listening"!!

I am a veterinarian in a small animal practice. About twice a month, we have a veterinary surgeon come to our practice to perform more difficult surgeries, usually orthopedics. He is coming on Wednesday of this week to perform 2 surgeries, called TPLO's, on two different dogs. The surgery is to stabilize the knee joint after a partial or complete cruciate ligament tear.

One of the patients is a guide dog for a blind woman. He had his left knee operated on in March and the organization "Guide Dogs for the Blind" paid the bill. The owner just now got around to trying to obtain authorization for payment of the second surgery. BTW, it is fairly common for both knees to be affected, especially in large breed dogs; this dog is a labrador. So a vet from the guide dog organization calls today wanting to know why we think the dog needs a second surgery. He thinks that we don't have enough evidence that the dog needs the surgery. (The veterinary surgeon, who did the surgery on his left knee, is the one who evaluated the dog's right knee and determined that he also needed surgery on that one.) Anyway, this guy was a total jerk!! Instead of just saying that he would like us to re-evaluate the dog, take more x-rays, etc., he said that we were CRAZY and UNETHICAL to proceed with this surgery. He actually said this to me and the other doctor that I work with! What professional person, representing a national organization like that would actually use the terms CRAZY and UNETHICAL when talking to a colleague???????? He was extremely rude, disrespectful and condescending. He interrupted me several times, not letting me even finish my sentences. I tried to explain to him, amid the interruptions, that we would re-radiograph the dog and re-evaluate before the surgery, and if it was not deemed to be necessary, we wouldn't proceed. He then barked back at me "UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES ARE YOU TO DO ANY SURGERY ON THAT DOG!!!!!" Basically he was just a complete A**!!!!

I have never been talked to like that by another veterinarian. I was so mad that I almost hung up on him several times, but I thought that might look even worse! I calmed myself at the end of the conversation to take down his address, phone number and fax, so that we can send him copies of the x-rays, record, blah, blah, blah.... We will see the dog on Wednesday and get the veterinary surgeon's exam notes and take new x-rays to send to this creep. Let him see with his own eyes that the dog needs surgery.

Sorry to be so long, just needed to get this out!! I am going to call the head of the organization and write a letter of complaint about this veterinarian. I can't imagine they would like to be represented like that.

Well, Kick punch and crunch has some marvelous moves that feel remarkably like you're pulling someone's head down and thrusting your knee upward. I think you should go do some of those and use your imagination! You can be thinking Namaste, and peace out, while you do it! :) Bella

(sorry he was a creep to you.)}(

Sorry that you had to deal with that today-- there's just no excuse for someone to be that rude!!!! Good idea about the letter of complaint. I'll bet it's not the first that's been written about him.

Sorry, Edie. That can happen anywhere you go, no matter who you deal with. All you can do is blow it off. In the end, you'll be vindicated when he gets the report.

Bella had some good thoughts on the matter, too.

Marla:)

That just goes to show you that there are ignorant people in every walk of life. x( Good for you for being the better person sand not playing down to his ill behavior. When he gets the evidence and realizes that you were correct, hopefully (but probably not) he will feel stupid.

Wow, that's absurd. A Ya-Ya just had to do one knee and then the other knee on her Dobe.

Question for you: Do you know anything about this TTA procedure? I always thought the TPLO was the best to use. My dogs (Vizslas and Dobes) do agility and I've heard great things about the TPLO. But on my Vizsla list someone was recommending the TTA over the TPLO for active dogs. Just curious.

Colleen

Definitely write that letter! Who does he think he is anyway??? What a creep! I'm sorry you had to go through that.

Thanks to you all!! I feel much better today and my fingers are itching to write that letter!

Colleen - We haven't heard a whole lot about the TTA yet. It does sound promising, though! For now we are recommending TPLO for ANY dog over 65# and all super-active dogs, no matter what their size. Our surgeon has done a Vizsla (32#) as well as a Westie (22#)! And our results have been fantastic!

Thanks, Edie. That is what I have heard also. Hopefully I won't have to ever make that decision but it pays to be informed!

Colleen

Hi Edie!

I just saw this thread, but was also wondering how your situation turned out.

I'm sorry you had to deal with such an unprofessional jerk. It's a shame that such a wonderful profession as Veterinary medicine has to have unsavory characters representing them like that. Of course, all professions have their black sheep. I hope it all turned out well, and you were able to do the much needed surgery on that poor doggie!

Hope you are doing well! :)

Hi all!! Thanks for caring!!! I haven't been on the boards much because June is one of our busiest months! I usually have some time to browse the boards at lunch, but lately, my lunches last about 5 minutes!!

I did talk to the supervisor of veterinarians and he apologized profusely. I also wrote a letter to the President and CEO of the guide dog organization, and just today received a letter in response from him. He was also apologetic, wanted to make sure the situation had been appropriately handled, and emphasized how important we veterinarians around the country are to his organization. So those were good things, and I feel much better. Still no apology from the jerk, but I never really expected one.

Oh, and they still haven't approved the surgery for the dog, so he is still limping around!!!!
