and wondered which videos would be good to start with. I've watched Cathe on TV and there's no way I could keep up. My knees are stiff, so lunges are modified. Any ideas for the old gals?

what sort of workouts are you looking for? low impact step? weight training? do you workout regularly or are you just starting from scratch?

if you don't normally exercise, i would start off with something like stretch max, just to limber you up and get moving. then maybe move into one of cathe's weight workouts and start off with no weights at all, then build yourself up in small increments to build stamina. both of these options will get you started without having to learn any complicated choreography to keep up with, which could prove to be frustrating!

good luck!

Hi Mary Ann! I would suggest you go to DVDs section & purchase Low Impact Step & Total Body Sculpting plus Total Body Stretching dvds. These will get you started. View the clips & also the description to know what equipment you'll need. Once you become acclimated to the workouts, come visit us again & I'll suggest something else to have you gradually "climb up the ladder" so to speak. HTH, Kathy:D

Hi Mary Ann. I'm not sure how active you are right now, but I think that strength training is critical as women get older. You can start with light weights and work your way up. I think that Cathe's Slow and Heavy series (with lighter weights) would be a good place to start. This series put emphasis on good form and since it is slow and controlled, you have less chance of injury.

I once saw a 60 Minutes story that showed Barbara Walters doing slow and heavy weight training and she said that it helped keep her body metabolism up and it was easier than jumping around and hurting her joints.

Just my two cents.

Hi Mary Ann,
My name is MaryAnn also, and I have been doing Cathe since the late 1980's with her first tape. I am now 60 years old and still do Cathe, BUT I have to use a 4" step and take out much of the high impact. I still get a good workout and can do all my Cathe tapes but just at a lower level. My knees and back cannot take all that high impact anymore, as they get achy. I learned to adjust and most of all accept the changes I have had to made. So I would say you can have fun with any of her tapes and just make the adjustment to fit your needs, and most importantly, not to feel guilty or feel you have to do what she does.

Thanks for the information. I am not active now. I was up until last year. I'd go to the gym 4xs a week. I think I burned myself out. Since that time, my knees really ache after exercise. I think the Low Impact DVD may be for me.

Thanks

Mary Ann

I would also suggest varying the activiites you do. Maybe only do step 1-2 times a week and do other cardio for your other cardio days. You might try dips instead of lunges or alternate to see if that helps your knees.

Hi Mary Ann,

You aren't old, and I always say that age is just a state of mind. On my next birthday which is May 9th, I am going to be 53, and I do have a creaky right knee.

There are ways to make your knees stronger, and you should work your quadriceps muscle, which holds the patella in place. Stretching also works wonders to alleviate the stiffness. Everybody on this thread has had wonderful advice, and most of Cathe's high impact moves can be modified to low implact. I alternate step with kickboxing, and I also do strength training which is very important as one gets older. I would purchase the basic step DVD, perhaps Kickmax when you get through that. The basic step DVD also has Body Fusion. As others have said, you can do it on a four inch step. The Stretching DVD is also great.

Welcome to the boards.
