I'm giving up

Hi Forum Friends,

I don't post very often but visit & read daily. Some of you may remember that I posted last June about tearing my rotator cuff just 2 weeks before my black belt exam. After surgery and nearly a year of physical therapy and rehab, I went back to karate to accomplish my goal. I was scheduled to take the next exam in September and all was going well until 2 weeks ago I suffered another setback. An MRI revealed that I tore 80-90% of my hamstring tendon away from the ishial tuberosity (the sit bones). My sports physician felt I still had enough strength left in that leg to escape surgery and therefore rehab with physical therapy but is consulting with a surgeon for another opinion. I sit here numb and can't even describe the deep sadness I feel.

I have spent the last 5 years working so hard to achieve this goal and it keeps getting taken away. Last year I was supposed to test along with DH, DD, & DS. It would have been the first time in school history that an entire family tested at the same time. It took a long time to accept what happened and now this!:(

I just can't take it any more. I have lost all interest in fitness....what's the point if all this strength training and cardio doesn't protect you against injuries like this. I'm sick of being told that I'm 46 and that puts me at risk for tears since tendons & ligaments become less pliable. There isn't a single Cathe dvd that I can't do and I have prided myself on being in good shape. Now, I just want to give up.....I haven't even pre-ordered the new workouts and can't do anything right now except upper body lifting and abs.

Sorry to be such a downer but I just needed to get this off my chest with people who would truly understand. Thanks for listening.

JJ

Well, don't give up.
46 is not old.. Maybe you need to get this muscle tendon problem totally fixed then rehab and listen to your doctor and come back slowly as to not injure yourself..
You will do great Say it.. You will survive and be as good as new..
We are here to listen . Even wining..
Keep on wining.. If that is what you need, just don't give up..

I'm really, really sorry to know you are going through this JJ. I have someone very close to me who is dealing with crippling injuries and chronic pain that have too kept him from doing the things that he enjoys, that are important to him and it hurts me to know he feels so rotten. I hope you will still work with your team on your recovery and won't lose all hope in exercise. You will get better. If you're feeling really low it might help to talk to a counselor. Dealing with chronic injuries can be really depressing and discouraging. I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers and send speedy recovery vibes your way.

Oh, JJ. I just want to come over there and give you a big ol' hug! I'm sorry for what you're going thru, after all the hard work and dedication. Take a day or 2 if you need to, and feel the sorrow. There's nothing wrong with that. Dwelling on it and asking 'why me' will not do much good beyond the initial setback though, right?

Picture yourself, rehabbed, fit and healthy again.
Picture yourself getting that black belt.
Picture the look of pride on your DH, DD and DS's faces when you finally PUSH THROUGH all the setbacks and reach your goal.
Picture yourself setting that awesome example for your children, and imagine the feeling of pride and accomplishment you will have.

YOU WILL HAVE!

Hang in there. There are tons of prayers coming your way!

I am so sorry to hear you are going through this J.J. You must be an extreme martial artist. Those are some serious injuries. I tore my rotator cuff in a car accident and am still in and out of rehab plus I broke my lower back years ago. But refuse to give up. Sure it's slow sometimes, but sometimes it's like a sign. Everything happens for a reason. Maybe there was a reason you were supposed to slow down, you just can't see it yet. Who knows??? Just don't give up. Take some time, recover, enjoy other parts of your life for awhile. If you're anything like me, perfecting something like your skill level in fitness, might have taken over other parts of your life (perfection in one area requires sacrifices in other areas) and you might be needed there...Just a thought, it was true in my case, I just couldn't see it until I was forced to slow down.

Prayer coming your way. Get well:):):)

JJ,

If you give up it will be like giving up life. Please don't do that. Life isn't easy, it does get better though. 46 years old, girl you have more than 46 years left in you before you even begin to see the end.

The youth in you is talking. Experiencing life has it's ups and downs, happy and sad days. Keep going, you see marvelous people that have harder challenges than you, and they manipulate what ever it is that they can't control and make things work for themselves.

If you cannot control one of your goals to reach, then accept that and make other goals. Life is all about goals anyway. I'm 56 years old, and would love to be able to do lots of things, but there are only so many hours in the day, and I also need to realize I'm aging rapidly and some of my tendons in my body are also not youthfull anymore. I have to be very careful. Years go by so quickly and I still haven't done many of my goals. It can be frustrating sometimes. So what? I keep going.

Health and fitness is so very important, but it isn't everything in life. It's just part of it. Do still make it a part of your life. If you haven't accomplished already what you have done, your injury, (I guarantee) would have been much more serious, think about that.

You are not a failure JJ, and I'm very proud of you for what you have already accomplished. There are always setbacks in life, and you need to learn how to deal with them. Who said life is fair?

Don't mean to lecture you. It's just that you hit home, and I feel your frustrations.

Go get em JJ, and reach your goals, and if you can't succeed for some reason with one, then challenge yourself with another one. Enjoy living and make it a goal to accept life whatever it may bring your way.

JJ, Please don't give up. It ain't over till it's over. Have you ever noticed how many elite athletes suffer injuries? You probably wouldn't even have injuries like this if you weren't pushing yourself to achieve your goal. Please try to relax, heal and rehab. I hope you feel differently when all is said and done.

JJ~We DO understand! I'm so sorry. I can relate somewhat. I injured my left knee 2 12/ years ago and could not get in super shape for the 2005 RT. Well, when the new RT was announced, I was sooo excited and knew I was going to be in excellent shape this time around. NOPE, injured my right knee this time around. Talk about a downer as you know. Injuries do eventually heal but not in our timing, that is for sure. Don't give up...just work EXTRA hard at what you CAN do right now. I know that advice isn't what you want to hear. We want to do what we want to do! Hang in there and be as patient as possible. You will be in my thoughts & prayers. Also, maybe just pre-ordering the new Cathe's will get you excited about what is ahead of you when you are healed? My best to you and BIG HUGS! {{{JJ}}}}

I understand. I am 41 and just had to have my hip replaced due to years of exercise (hard exercise) and overuse. So please know that all you need to do is respect the healing process and take this time to relax and concentrate on other areas of your life. Personally, I am reading, resting and watching reality television!:7 I am also thinking about volunteering at the hospital I had the surgery done at, after I heal that is.When I was diagnosed, at first I was so angry, like you I thought that exercise was supposed to protect us against such things right? But when you train like athletes do, no matter what your age, this intense training puts you at risk for alot of injuries.

Athletes go through this all the time. Just know you are in good company. Start reading about other athletes that have gone through injuries and have come back stronger than ever. Look at Lance Armstrong for instance. He had cancer and then came back a winner of the Tour de France!

Everything happens for a reason, nothing is a mistake, know this and you will find a sense of peace and quiet inside yourself. Like Gayle said, in your mind picture your muscles, tendons and ligaments, healed, healthy and strong. And go ahead and order the new workouts, it will motivate you to rehab and heal faster. At least you can work upper body and abs girl, that is terrific! I have to wait for at least week 4 to do that safely. I hope you are working with a therapist that understands athletes and injuries, they will understand your drive and need to "get back in the game".

I truly believe there is nothing you cannot do if you set your mind to it, so take the time to "clean out the junk" and focus on what your body can do right now, you are a very lucky girl actually, some people cannot even walk, see, hear, etc... you know?:7

Just know we understand and are right there with you.:)

JJ,

I remember your posts really well, because I was testing for my black belt in April of 2006. Your post really hit home for me. I was diagnosed with extreme arthritis in my left hip in March of that year. The doctor told me that I was looking at a hip replacement. He also told me my hip looked like someone 25 years older than I am. I am 51. I was crushed, I thought I have to give up my karate, which I absolutely love as you do. I was going to be testing with two of my sons and one of my daughters.

I did end up testing, because I do not need a hip replacement for a few years yet. I do not experience any of the pain associated with the arthritis. I did go on and I tested this past April for my first degree.

I know how much karate has meant to me and to my family. So, I know that this has been a big disappointment for you. Things will get better. It weems that in life if it isn't one thing it is another that goes wrong. This is part of life.

Tneah gave some excellent advice along with the other posters. Tneah just underwent a hip replacement and she is in the space she needs to be, by accepting the circumstances and dealing with it.

With your family's help and God's help you will get through this rough time. I will pray for you.

HUGS & HUGS,

Cheryl

I have tears in my eyes reading all your kind & heartfelt posts. I wish I could reach through this computer screen and give you all a hug. You have given me much to think about as well as a kick in the pants to stop feeling sorry for myself. I can see that we all suffer injuries and setbacks...I am not alone. It is just so discouraging;( It has been a very long year rehabing my shoulder and just when I think I'm back to 100%, BAM I'm sent back to square one. I don't understand why but I guess I will just have to accept and hope that one day the reason will become clear.

Thanks again my friends...your kindness has lifted my heart.

JJ

Hang in there, JJ, and don't give up on yourself or on Cathe. It's not worth stressing over. The past few months, I've been on & off so much with working out that I've been consistent with inconsistency. Do something active that is relaxing like walking especially with the summer months.

Sorry you are having to deal with injuries. I hope and pray you are feeling much better soon. Try to focus on what you can do each day.:)
