I'm embarrassed to admit it but I need basic computer help...

Even though I have been using the Net for a long while, I have never really learnt much about Windows (the system I've got) and hence I know nothing about things like copying and pasting links, inserting links and the like.

Can anyone help me with a) how to cut/copy/paste a link and b) any really basic websites for computer illiterates like me. My goal is to create my own basic website and I'd like to learn more about Word and Excel etc.

Thanks
Liz N

To create a website you need Dreamweaver or FrontPage

To cut, copy, paste: Highlight the link by running your cursor over it with the left mouse button down, then right click on it, you will see cut, copy, paste, So select copy, then you can paste it somewhere by going to the location you want to paste to, right-clicking again.

Liz, don't be embarrassed!! We all had to learn at some point.

You don't necessarily need to buy software to create a webpage. I hosted a site with a company called Blue Domino, and the software to create the page was sent to me free. Of course, you are "paying" for it by paying to host the page, but I had no advertising on mine which was VERY nice. Most free sites will place advertising on your page, which - depending on what type of site you want to create - can be very distracting and annoying. It all depends on what you want to do with the site.

As for learning the basics of your operating system, the "Dummies" books are excellent references. They make one for each Windows OP, and they'll teach you things you never knew your computer could do! They've available anywhere books are sold - in stores or online. It's a learning process for all of us! None of us was born knowing how to do things on a computer. You'll figure it out - hang in there!!

As others have said, we all need to start somewhere! The most basic requirement for owning a computer these days is a good anti-virus programme but you must make sure you keep it up to date. Norton Anti-virus is a good example of a reliable anti-virus product. You must make sure you keep your Operating System up-to-date via http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com If you don't do these things, you are leaving your computer vulnerable to viruses, spyware and other kinds of attacks. If you have broadband, you must also have a firewall. www.kerio.com has a very good free firewall but it is rather too complex to beginners. Sygate, Norton, McAfee and others make reasonably priced firewall products which are easier to use.

You don't need any software beyond Notepad (click on Start then click on Run, type notepad and click OK to load it, or find it from your Start menu) to create a Web site! You will need to learn how to write code but it's very, very easy. Applications like Macromedia Dreamweaver or Microsoft Frontpage allow you to create content in the same way you would if you were writing something in Word and let you drag and drop images into your page without having to know how to use code to set width, font, colours, et al. If you're serious about Web page creation and care about making your site compatible with any Operating System and Web browser then you should learn how to code.

These sites offer some help:

http://www.cookwood.com/html5ed/examples/
http://www.cookwood.com/html4_4e/
http://www.blooberry.com/indexdot/html/

Microsoft's Office site has some good tutorials and templates: http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/training/default.aspx
...and it's always worth typing, for example, "Microsoft Word tutorial" into www.google.com

As for copying and pasting, you can also do it via CTRL+C for copy and CTRL+V for paste. CTRL+X is cut but it's better not to use it until you've got the hang of copying and pasting! CTRL+Z is undo - it's a life saver! Many applications allow you to undo multiple times whereas some only let you undo the last thing you did.

Windows and Office have some really good built in help guides if you use Windows XP in the case of Windows. Search for the glossary of Windows Keyboard Shortcuts to find just about everything you need to know about cutting down the number of mouse miles :)

For technical help with your Operating System and other Microsoft products, go to http://support.microsoft.com - it tells you how to deal with error messages like illegal operations and the dreaded blue screen o' death.

Hi Liz,

Don't be embarrassed. We all have to start somewhere. Microsoft offers "training courses" that are actually more like self-paced tutorials for all of its applications (Word, Excel, Access, etc.). It's free! http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/training/default.aspx

Before starting any cut/copy/paste, you must highlight the info, whether it be a word, paragraph, or link. To cut, leave the info highlighted and press Ctrl + x on your keyboard. To copy, Ctrl + c. To paste, Ctrl + v. For all of these, hold down Ctrl as you press the letter. These functions work whether you are typing an email, posting on these boards, or typing something up in Word.

Do you have AOL? It is super easy to create a site if you do. I believe Geocities is another free way to go about it.

I hope that helps!

Thanks Girls, you are all legends - I have made note of all of the sites mentioned and have printed out the copy/paste/cut instructions - that way I can have more of a practice doing this.

Thanks for being so nice about my embarrassment, I am very grateful.

Cheers
