I had my laproscopic hernia repair on Dec 3. Apparently laproscopic hernia repair is a much bigger deal than regular hernia repair. I had to have it done laproscopically as I had 2 hernias on either side of a previous 10" vertical abdominal incision. In the surgery they made 9 incisions in my abdomen, in the general shape of a wall clock ( I now have 13 small and 2 large abdominal scars). I was supposed to spend 1-2 nights in the hospital. I had many, many complications from the surgery and ended up in the hospital for 16 days. One of the complications was from the narcotics so they took me off of them. You should never have surgery with 9 incisions without narcotics. When they sent me home the pain wasn't managed and they wanted to readmit me. I figured I could be in physical agony at home or emotional agony in the hospital. I chose to stay home where I would be emotionally together. Fortunately, my husband is amazing and has been taking really good care of me.
I knew I was going to be in a lot of pain from the surgery, but I wasn't emotionally prepared for all of the complications. I am lucky to have such good health care and I was always well taken care of and safe in the hospital.
The unfortunate part of the whole situation is that I have had a long term (2 year) health problem that the doctors have not been able to manage. This surgery has fixed the hernias, but not the underlying health problem. I am grateful to be feeling a little better each day and to know I will fully recover from the surgery, but still overall frustrated that when I am healed from this surgery I still will not have fixed the real problem.
Right now I am focusing on the fact that I will be home, and not in the hospital, for the holiday.
