If you work out after work

Caren

Cathlete
I have worked out in the morning for the last several years before work. I have gotten up at 4 AM and worked our for about two hours every weekday. Last week I moved to a new house and have a longer drive to work, and I refuse to get up any earlier than 4:00 AM so I am going to have to start working out after work in the evening.

Any advice on how I can motivate myself to work out after work? When I worked out in the morning, I always just woke up and got it out of the way, but it's easier to talk myself out of it after work.

I always do my cardio before work, but I do my lifting after at the gym. What motivates me is how much I enjoy the lifting, as opposed to the cardio which just seems like a necessary evil to me.

Also the gym is a really fun social outlet, so I look forward to going & seeing my friends.

Same way - it's just a mental thing. Where in your house do you work out? If it's in your living room, then maybe you could set your equipment up before you leave in the morning. Then it's right in your face.

The only time I have a hard time working out after work is when there's something planned for the evening. That totally throws a wrench into everything!

I've always worked out after work and the key for me is to walk in the door, change and start working out right away. If you sit around too long it gets harder to get up and start working out. And that way, you'll be done early enough to do whatever you need to do afterwards!!:)
Now I have a 9 month old and I have to wait for him to go to bed, but I look forward to Cathe's workouts so it's not that hard...

Working out after work is sometimes a challenge. I really have to psyc myself up for it alll day long. Especially lifting. I love cardio, but lifting i have to really make myself do. It really is a matter of don't think just do!

I also find that working out in the evening gives me energy to be productive in the evenings, not just sit on the couch and watch TV like i want to do right when i get home!

Good Luck!

I make sure that I change as soon as I get home from work and start working out...like another poster pointed out, the longer you sit around after getting home, the harder it will be to get your workout in. It's happened to me enough times so now I know better:+ !!

I have tried working out before work, but find that after work is so much easier for me. My body is "awake" and I feel like I get a better workout. I also think about it on my way home. I'm like, "Okay, so I'm going to do PUB and Cardio Fusion tonight" or whatever. I also immediately change into my workout gear when I get home and get right to it...because, like the other person said, it I sit around or dawdle too much when I get home, it's harder to get up and work out. I find that I go to sleep super easily on the nights that I work out...what's funny is that the workouts seem to also rejuvenate me after a hard day.

I do most of my workouts after work. Like some of the other posters have said, don't sit down and watch TV, just get to it!

I have a 40 minute commute so I'll sometimes use that time to get myself psyched up - decide what workout I want to do, what I want to wear, play some music to get me going, etc.

Also, I always try to have some kind of energy snack before I leave work, like a bagel or something. That way, I won't be hungry when I get home and tempted to snack, and I'll be fueled up for my workout.

Hi Caren~
I,too, worked out at 4A for years. Switching to PM workouts was difficult for me mentally (even tho I felt stronger and more limber in the PM). The only thing that worked for me was to change my mind set...and just get to it the moment I walked thru the door. I told myself, "My appointment was changed from 4A to 4P - get over it and get to work." One problem I do have is after particularly intense workouts it is a little more difficult for me to fall asleep at my usual bedtime. I still prefer working out in the morning and hope to be able to change "my appointment" back to 4A in the not too distant future. Hang in there.

Hi Caren,
I work out in the morning for about an hour. I also do some in the evening but my main workout is in the morning. Is there someway you could do something in the morning? wow two hours every week day is something. An hour is about my max at one time. My mind seems to start wondering if I go much long at one sitting.

I considered doing one hour in the morning and an hour in the evening, since I don't have time to do two house in the morning anymore, but I would rather get it all done at once. I like to do one hour of aerobics, then rotate upper body & lower body days. I am afraid that if I just do one or the other in the morning, I will be more likely to blow my other hour later on because I'll be thinking "Eh, my morning workout way enough."

When you get home, get into your workout clothes immediately and put the workout you are going to do into the player. Don't let yourself relax too much. Concentrate on setting up your area (step, weights, etc.) You can take a little time to have a snack or prepare yourself mentally. Then get to work!

Working out when you get home gives you something to look foward to, esp. these days when the days are short and it gets dark so soon.

Just have that last bottle of water about one hour before you leave work, leaving enough time for a potty break, hum some Cathe tunes on the way home and you will be ready to go!!! :)
