If You really Want to Do the "Right" Thing...

Beavs, I agree.

There are many of us who like to debate politics, but what I have seen on the last few threads has been really distasteful. There are a handful who simply can't state their opinions in a classy, tasteful way. There are a handful who deliver their opinions as if they came from on high, and then immediately launch into foaming-mouth attack mode when someone has the nerve to disagree with them. There are a handful who refuse to take responsibility for their own tacky behavior and instead prefer to stomp up and down and say "she started it! She started it!" when someone else points out that they too, were part of the ugliness. Here's a tip for all those folks: a hallmark of maturity, self-confidence and good breeding is first and foremost the ability to remain civil, even in trying circumstances.

I'm off to make blueberry muffins....

Sparrow - if at all possible -

you write so eloquently and I would love to know how to properly start a thread or a topic or respond to a topic so that one is not vilified.

You seem to have a knack for stating yourself . .

Hope the muffins came out good. I am off for Lobster and football . . (lobster is a once a year fundraiser for low income sick kids and they raise over $25000) - plus it's a blast working it which I will be doing tomorrow.

Thanks (I would insert some sort of smiley here but can't seem to figure it out)

Beaves I totally agree with your thoughts, however, theres no requirement to turn this thread into "I love Beaves" thread.
Sorry Beaves that nothing agianst you.

I've watched and read this OD Forum with great amusment and interest for months now. Its not just political threads and religious threads that get nasty. The Bullying mentality is alive and well here on these Forums and I for one, think its appaling a bunch of grown women (supposedly) adults behave in such an offensive way. If you really want to do the right thing, stop this Pack mentality behaviour.

It is also interesting that sooo many of you actually CARE about your country. Thats a good thing, not a bad thing. However, when it comes to debating politics and religion No-one, not even the politcians can get the "How to debate in a non offensive, keep the personals outta it, lets go to war on this" right

Sorry to be a dissenting voice here, but if no one wanted to discuss/debate hot topics like politics and religion, then there would far fewer posts to those threads than what we typically see.

I personally find the debate to be pretty interesting and enlightening for the most part, as long as folks can refrain from personal attacks (which I KNOW we can do). I never expect anyone to be converted, but I've found in some cases that I've gotten a better understanding of someone else's view...even if I don't agree with it.
*nods* I agree. :)

I'm pretty good at discussing politics and religion without getting upset. And I never aim to convert...quite the opposite actually. I'm always looking to see why people feel the way they do ~ just in case I'm missing something in my own line of thinking.

Fortunately, we aren't forced to read every thread here. I'll probably always pop my head into threads on controversial subjects, but I completely understand those who have no desire to do so.
