If you or a loved one takes Diovan

August

Hello, this is way off topic and I generally don't like to write about personal things, but I kept thinking about whether to post or not...what with all the holiday celebrations going on, I decided to just go ahead.

My mom (73) has been taking Diovan (a blood pressure medicine) for several years and has never had a problem with it. She's not much of a drinker, but for celebrations, will have a glass of champagne or a mimosa, or sometimes a glass of wine.

On Thanksgiving, she had a glass of champagne, and then with dinner, a glass of red wine. Around the end of dinner, still sitting in her dining chair, my mom lost consciousness and became very ill. To say the least, it was frightening. Fifteen minutes after the episode, incredibly and thankfully she was totally back to normal.

According to the doctor at the emergency hospital (and confirmed after several further tests and visits), the amount of alcohol she had plus the Diovan (she'd had the medicine in the morning, and the alcohol during dinner) made her blood pressure suddenly drop, causing dizziness, disorientation, and vomiting. The doctor recommended my mom to stop having alcohol.

So if you or a loved one is taking Diovan, you might want to check with your doctor to find information about taking the medicine and having alcohol. I would certainly hate for anything like that to happen to anybody else, just over a glass of wine.

Have a safe and wonderful holiday season!

August, I'm sorry this happened to your Mom. These medication interactions are very serious business.

Do you happen to know the drug name? I'm guessing Diovan is the brand name. It's helpful to know what name it might be sold under if it comes in generic form.

Take care!

Oh my goodness -- how frightening! I'm so glad she is okay. So many people take blood pressure medicine -- I would have never guessed that you shouldn't drink with it. Thanks for posting!
