IBS, protein, and weights workouts

Shaz

Cathlete
I am recovering from a particularly bad bout of IBS and fatigue. I have had IBS for many years, but after some recent reading, I decided to try some new advice: avoiding concentrated protein (ie, meat, fish, eggs) in the evenings. I am finding this VERY helpful - the abdominal pain and discomfort (which tends to be bad in the evenings) has gone. Usually I'm still uncomfortable when I go to bed, so now I feel a lot better.

My problem...

I do my workouts in the evenings! I'm really not a morning person! So, after lifting weights, I can only eat foods that are mainly carbs and veg.

What are your thoughts on the impact on my weights workouts? I make sure I eat a lot of protien foods at breakfast, snack, and lunch, so will this be enough? How important is it to eat protein AFTER weights? Will I be wasting my time? Or is the protein from earlier in the day enough?

Shaz,

Are you sure it's all protein or just the type of protein? I have IBS and the only thing that irritates it is dairy and legumes.

Hi Candi, I have milk intolerance too. It seems to be meat, especially red meat. I also can't tolerate protein bars/drinks (even the non-milk ones) at any time of day. I seem to better with fish, and I'm not yet sure about eggs (don't usually have those in the evening). I've tried taking a supplement that contains digestive enzymes and also increases stomach acid, but that doesn't seem to help.

Shaz,

Sorry for your situation. Protein bars get me real good too. As a matter of fact if I eat one in the morning, I'm a gastric mess all day long. I can't help you but I can commiserate with you :)

Red meat used to bother me. I started purchasing a very lean chopped sirloin recently which has helped. It contains only 4 grams of fat per serving and I seem to digest it very well.

I say stick with what you can eat that doesn't make you sick. This way, you will feel good enough to workout harder. If you have an upset stomach/IBS all the time, you probably don't feel great and therefore your workouts will suffer.

When I thought I had IBS (Dr. said it probably was this, but I didn't want colon tests, She said to go with a high fiber diet. I didn't cut out meat/dairy, just increased my fiber to as close to 30 grams per day as I could. My symptoms cleared up quickly. You would be surprised at what little fiber there is in a lot of foods. One good source is Fiber One cereal. I think it has 14 grams a serving.

Good luck and I feel for you. IBS is not pleasant, isn't it fun to always have to be sure where a bathroom is? Melissa
