I Need to do Bootcamp More...

Soosan

...otherwise it's too hard! I usually do it once a week but have recently been doing Body Max. This is the second week I've put BC back into my rotation and it just about killed me again. Maybe it's because my muscles are fried from 8 wks of PS and now 2 wks so far of S&H, who knows? Anyway, I know that in the past it got almost "easy" when I did it every week. There's something about BC that just seems so thorough and it really does wonders for my core. I can't wait to see Bootcamp II! I hope it's as tough!:)

Hello, Sooooooooooooosan (if that is still your real name) . . .

I too realized about a month into the Intensity Series epoch (I bought the whole series on the first preorder wave) that I had to do at least the Boot Camp cardio only intervals at least once a week, or I'd die bouncing the next time I tried it. (My personal nemesis at the beginning was interval #5 the dreaded squat thrust climbers, followed by those many million sequential power kicks.) Now, I stick the cardio only premix at the end of whatever cardio I'm doing every Sunday morning, and it's nice to be at a point where it's challenging but not deathlike.

I too am looking forward to the high-intensity release that Cathe is currently filming. I'm sure Rocky is as well.

Judging from all of your evil mish-moshes, your cardio capacity is vastly superior to mine, so it's probably futile for me to compare, but... was BC hard for you to do as is? Did you start doing the cardio only portion right away or was it something you worked up to? Maybe I should try to stick a couple of intervals at a time to some of my other cardio and see what it does for my cardio capacity. Maybe doing this will make BC easier more quickly too.

Rocky's definitely looking forward to BC II. I got him his own little high step and he was so thrilled, he finally gave Bullwinkle his wheel back. I have to keep telling him not to use it as a regular step but he is such an animal when it comes to intense workouts!

Actually, I never did the Boot Camp workout strictly as produced (i.e. cardio lower body upper body core, then onto the next cycle); my heart rate dropped too much, plus I didn't like going to the floor as often as that workout did. I started with the Everything But Core premix and learned, again, that I didn't like the HR drop during the upper body segments, then omitted that from my ongoing "program" such as it is.

What I use in Boot Camp DVD primarily is the cardio-only premix, AND the cardio / lower-body only premix, which is deliciously fiendish when combined with another leg-circuit-style routine (as in the Body Max power circuit segment or the CTX Power Circuit circuit segment).

I think sticking in a couple of intervals in at the end of your main cardio routine, and then working your way up to more and more intervals, is a great way to incrementally build up your cardio endurance. You could start with a couple of the easier intervals, OR kick over the traces and do the hardest ones just to get acclimated. Either way, you'll build up capacity far more quickly than you think if you're consistent.

Did Rocky pick up on the fact that you just filled a CrackerJack box with sand and covered it in tinfoil to create his high step?

A-Jock

You know what's funny, one of the easier intervals for me is the one with the terminators! I'm very long-legged, which you'd think would make it more difficult. I don't mind the sequential power kicks too much either but the ice breakers get me every time. They were ALL difficult for me today, though. I can't imagine doing them all in a row! I'm a goal-oriented person (or maybe I've just got a death wish) so I will try to introduce them incrementally to my regular cardio and see how long it takes me to do them all.

I guess you figured I'd use your "rodent high step" idea from your recent SF article. Rocky did figure it out but didn't mind after I gave him the CrackerJacks that had been in the box.

Sooooooooooooosan . . .

My hat is off to you and my skull gleams for you. The squat-thrusters and the sequential power kicks were two intervals I couldn't complete the first time I did that workout, and by the time we got to those many million ice breakers I couldn't complete those either. Of course, that made me do the damn thing over and over again immediately in the ensuing days until I could.

Easy for you....I can't even imagine. I call them terminator killers! I hate 'em. I've had to work my way into these by not jumping after each one, just standing up and starting the next one. I do the jumps in the middle, and continue with the second set the same as the first. Hopefully-someday-I can add that jump into both sets. I salute you-that's awesome-easy for you.

Diana, I never said they were EASY - I said the interval was one of the EASIER ones for me (compared to all of the others. In BC "easier" is a VERY relative term!) What I wonder is how Cathe can talk through all of these intervals! Have you done the cardio only premix? Just thinking about doing it makes me tired, but now I've publicly admitted that I will try to work up to it so I guess I'll have to:eek: ! Anybody want to join me?

I was reading thru these post and smiling. I remember the 1st time I did the Gauntlet from the Terminator DVD. I knew there were some BC cardios in it but hadn't looked at the breakdown and kinda figured...nah...Cathe wouldn't put those terminator squat thrusts in it....WRONG! Much to my surprise they showed up....they kill me every time...modify, modify!...:)...Carole

Aquajock you have made my morning. You and Cathe are two of my main fitness gods and I couldn't believe what I read that you also had the same &*#$ problem with those three intervals. I thought I was just a major WIMP. I still can't compare to you but I was also determined to get through them and I have but my terminator killers still aren't very pretty. THANKS!:7

Hello, Miss SamiRoses -

If you saw The A-Jock, with her bald head wrapped with a bandanna done into a sweat band, do her squat-thrust-climbers you'd see how unpretty unpretty can be. For some reason, my nose always picks that particular interval to start running, my mouth is hanging open, the grunts are competing with the drool, more often than not I break wind (shatter it, to be more precise) and my jumps make me look like I've been electrocuted. DH has told me so.

RE: Thanks for reminding me!

Thanks for this post!
Yes, I need to do Boot Camp on a regular basis too, and It has been a month... So this morning I did it, and the comments from this post were running through my head helping me get through it. Just knowing that I'm not the only poor soul suffering through this workout was comforting.

PS my preferrd method of BC is to do everything but core then tack on the core after the stretch.

PS Does anyone else have a hard time lowering their head for the triceps on the floor? I need to elevate my bench at the head end, because I don't feel comfortable being horizontal when my heart is pounding!

RE: Thanks for reminding me!

A-jock...."jumps make me look live I've been electrocuted"...I'm laughing out loud. I just looked really ticked off because mine are NOT NEAR as pretty as Cathe and crew. My jumps are more like a little spastic movement up.

Judy.... I ALWAYS do everything but core, and then tack the core on at the end. For me its the only way I will do this workout!

Glad I'm not alone...Sami

Well, I tacked on two BC intervals to Step Blast this morning. It wasn't TOO bad, but I didn't want to add another because I think I'm better off working my way up slowly. Next cardio, I'll add one or two more, depending on how I'm feeling. I decided to add these intervals in the order they're on the DVD, rather than in terms of difficulty. Pressing the "next" button on my remote or programming them would take too much effort :p .

A couple of questions for you, A-Jock:

1) How long are your land cardio sessions generally and how many cardio workouts do you do a week (water and land)?

2) I don't know if you know anything about Pilates, but, I have a weak core and have added Pilates 2x/wk to my regular workouts to see if it helps improve this area. My goal is to do a teaser. If I use a 3-5 lb dumbbell, it is much easier for me to do it. (This goes for roll-ups too.) Why does the added weight make it easier? (And using 5 lbs makes it easier than using 3 lbs.) Will using weights help or hinder my progress toward this goal?

Rocky keeps lording it over me that he can do a teaser with perfect form, not to mention that he can jump from tree top to tree top.

Hello, Sooooooooooooosan . . .

1. Let's see: my land cardio sessions (usually two "formal" ones, i.e. Cardio A La Cathe) each run about 50 minutes to an hour; my aqua classes each run about 80 minutes total, with about 50 minutes each dedicated to cardio (with muscle endurance as an added benefit). I also do some post-class pool drills with flutter kicking, treading water, more ab work and more upper body work on Sat. a.m.'s mostly to kick the crap of the workweek out of my head. Also, Mon.-Thurs. during the workday I also do a 50-minute brisk walk with the headphones on just as a mid-day energy boost, but that does not really get me into even the low end of my aerobic training zone.

2. I know precisely zero about Pilates (I don't even know what a "teaser" is unless it stars Sam Waterston) so I have no clue how to answer your question.

Don't tell Rocky that.

That's great, Bobbi! It's a toughie, but I'm telling you, the more you do it, the easier it becomes! Which cardio segment do you find toughest?

It's not the squat. It's not the thrust. It's not even the climb but the whole confounded thing! It hurts! It seems I move through the sequence just a fraction of a second more slowly than the crew and striving to get in sync, well, my eyeballs actually shot across the room, rolled under the television stand and it took me several moments to find them and put them back in. I am sore through the upper back and lats today and I like it! :)

I can't say I enjoyed it but after I'd wrung myself out, I was pretty delighted to have accomplished that!

Be careful of those eyeballs, Bobbi. As your mother used to tell you, they're the only pair you have:p !
