I NEED advice and encouragement!

Quite a few years ago I was a member of this forum and had been working out with Cathe for a few years. I was healthy, in shape, and at a good weight.
I have been through some very stressful times in my life since then (Deaths in the family, etc. My brother -only sibling- passed away at 39 from a heart attack.) Anyway, I am having a hard time trying to get back into working out and eating healthy. I am now 40 lbs overweight, have high cholesterol, and am obviously out of shape.
My question is this: What workout should I start with to ease back into Cathe workouts? I don't want to overdo it when starting back.
Thanks!

Hi Skippy,

Congratulations to you for deciding to get back in the game! Why not pop on over to Cathe's Rotation forum and check out her Beginner Rotation? She put that together about a year or so ago.

Do you know that she is also going to release a Low Impact Series this Friday? Oct 21 is the shipping date! She's promising us high intensity, but there are "joint-friendly" premixes as well, apparently.

During the time I earned my MBA, I didn't workout so it was hard for me to back into Cathe as well. Prior to working out, I walked alot then I did all the low impact workouts she had at the time. As Sandra stated, her Low Impact series comes out this coming Friday. It won't be easy but easier on the joints.
Walk and don't push yourself too hard. If you get an opportunity to do STS, I would do it. I lost 20 pounds on it.
Best wishes!!

Hi Skippy,

I am so sorry about the hard times you have been having. Please know my heart goes out to you. I can't imagine what it is like to lose a sibling. You have my deepest sympathy.

I'm so sorry to hear about your recent life trials and tribulations. However, I am so happy for you that you are ready to get back into workout mode. As others have suggested previously, Cathe's new low impact workouts would probably be a great way to get back into the workout groove. Also, I think her Low Impact Step, Total Body Sculpting, Basic Step, and Body Fusion workouts are good choices too. Best of luck, you can do it!! :)

I would suggest you start by walking with Leslie Sansone. If you are not familiar with her, she has lots of walking at home DVDs they are stress free and an easy way to get back into the habit of working out-- without dread. Cathe's new low impact series, while amazing, looks to intense for some one who is just starting out again. I would check out Cathe's beginner rotation and definitely look at Leslie. She has a new 5 mile workout that has 3 miles of just walking and 2 miles of toning with a band. It is chaptered and you can do as many or as few miles as you want. Wishing you all the best. I am very sorry for the loss of your brother.

I agree with all the suggestions made here, and I too am sorry for your loss.

I would definitely make sure you get a complete physical by a doctor, maybe even a stress test before embarking on a workout rotation. Early heart disease can be hereditary.

Best of luck!

As someone who is also getting back to exercising after life's trials and tribulations knocked me off track..... and being now out of shape and 45 lbs overweight... after being in good shape all my life...... I know it can be done but I'm still in the beginning stages of doing it.

I will be starting (tomorrow - Monday) Day 1 of Week 9 of Cathe's Beginner Rotation. I highly recommend it. Here's the link:

http://cathe.com/forum/f100/official-cathe-beginner-rotation-236223/

You only need 3 DVDs to do the Beginner Rotation:

Basic Step/Body Fusion
Low Impact Step/Total Body Sculpting
Total Body Stretching

While I have pre-ordered the new Low Impact Series, after watching the video clips, I know it will be a while before I will do most of those workouts. Even though they are low impact, they are fast paced and intense, so not something I'll be ready for anytime soon.

After a lot of great advice here in the forums (particularly from Stacy), I would recommend - for weight workouts after you finish the Beginner Rotation - or to mix in if you get bored with those workouts - these DVDs:

Supersets/Push Pull - 50 minute total body workouts that also have upper body and lower body premixes

Muscle Max - a terrific traditional total body workout .... also with premixes.

Pure Strength series of 3 DVDs
Pure Strength - Back, Biceps and Abs
Pure Strength - Chest, Shoulders and Triceps
Pure Strength - Legs and Abs

It's an older series, but a wonderful classic weight workout which allows you to work each body part once a week.

for Cardio... there are lots of options... Cathe's step DVDs, walking briskly outside, jogging, treadmill and elliptical at a gym, spin bike, swimming.....

The important thing is, of course, just to get moving. It doesn't really matter what you do, just that you do something. And walking outside is a great first step.

But.. again.. I highly recommend Cathe's Beginner Rotation.

Thank you so much everyone!
I think I will try the beginner rotation as I have all of the workouts for this. I won't be doing any Leslie walking workouts as they bore me.

I will start out slowly though. I guess I am scared of DOMS. ha ha I will keep you all posted.

Tomorrow, I plan to move my workout equipment up into the game room. (My steps, dumbells, etc.) I'm excited to get started again!

Oh, and just wanted you all to know I used to be known on the forums as WannaBeStrong. I hadn't used the username in so long I didn't know my password; and had switched email addresses, so I had to make up a new name.

Good for you for coming back! It's hard and I know the loss of a brother too. (45 to cancer!) Thinking of you as you work your way back to good health. Just making the effort is the first step and once you get those "feel-good" endorphins back into your system, you'll want to just keep going. And, just remember that when you feel those DOMS, it means you did something GOOD for yourself. Hugs and WELCOME BACK!
