... I think I've officially lost my mind. My DD (and now me, coerced) wants to make one of these OOAK (one of a kind) barbies, where you remove the face with nail polish remover, and redo it with acrylics, make new clothes etc. Well, we tried to make her skin kinda purple... my DD and I wanted to make a "night elf"... but all the boiling did was warp her hands. Has anyone ever tried to dye something plastic without using totally toxic chemicals? I wasted half a bottle of grape juice... and the barbie is not purple!

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA *breathes* BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA....

Okay, this wins as "most original and strange thread ever":p

Unfortunately, I've never tried dying a Barbie purple. But I imagine food colouring (mix red and blue to get the purple you want) would work a whole lot better than grape juice;)

I called my DD over to take a look... she thinks it's awesome. Where do you get the faceless dolls from Japan? The web?

Bobbi,

I just wanted to say I am enjoying your ever changing avatar pictures...you have such a great smile...please don't ever stop smiling!

Charlotte~~

Things to look forward to with my DD...

I have to ask...

What age is your DD? Mine is 4 and I have a feeling she will want to dye a barbie soon. She already wants to dye her own hair and mine. And I never even used sun-in on my hair.

:)

LMAO! Okay, this thread DOES win the strangest most eye catching ever. LOL!!! This sounds like a really cool Halloween activity.

I can't believe you boiled barbie.
YOU KILLED HER....

Try manic panic. It should work. The goofy stores like hot topic should have it..
This is too funny.
I thought when i was a kid and changed the body parts around. Heads, arms, legs...
Kens head on barbie...

First of all.....I, well, I am speechless. I was a very creative child, but not to this extent! I am in awe that your daughter would even think of this...it's totally cool!!! (I think that the food coloring idea is probably the best, and you shouldn't have to boil her in it. Food dyes can be used in cool or tepid water....I don't know if vinegar would help, though. You know, like dyeing Easter eggs.)
My creativity ran more along the line of sewing and crocheting my own barbie clothes. I think that I probably had the first lesby barbie, although at that age I didn't know. I never got a Ken doll, so I just pretended one of my dolls was the man, wait, that'd be something else, right?

Bobbi- I just wanted to comment on your daughter's painting ability...it's totally gorgeous! I wouldn't have ever known it was hand painted if you hadn't said.

Thanks so much for the link, Bobbi. My DD went on that site and these dolls look perfect... I had no idea they had "ready to customize" ones. Anyway, I can't believe that was your DD's first! We think the eyes look amazing, too.

We have a few barbies that don't have arms and legs (from our dog) so I think my DD will practice on those. Also we're going to try Shelley's idea of using food coloring... but add some vinegar, too, to see if that will dye the skin. She really wants her night elf to be purple. (But of course!)

My DD will be 12 in September... and we've been doing different creative activities since she was, well, 4! Good, clean, brain-expanding fun!

Thank you. :) I can't wait to tell her that. She would probably try to hire you to make clothes for her dolls. She scours the toy isle at the store and his suit is a Ken Doll outfit. The face is so small. I cannot belive she could do it and I smile at the idea of what I would produce if I tried to do it. ;) She set out to do it the day before she finally painted him and I found her rathr sad and destressed because of shaking hands. I used to think I was creative but she's takes it to another level. I kknow she will be dilighted that you like him.
