I have a weird work problem

This girl who works right outside my office door wears headphones all day b/c she's listening to music on her computer. I don't know why, but this really bothers me. I feel that it's unprofessional to wear headphones at work, unless you're a transcriptionist.

Is it just me? I can't justify why this bothers me, but it does.

You must not have a mind-numbingly boring job. My last job was data entry and without radio in the AM I would have gone crazy!!

I think it depends on the office type, and your job type. Some situations are OK, some not.......

Are you PMSing????}(

I, on the other hand, need for you to wear the headphones cause I don't want to hear the music. I guess it also depends on the job. For instance, a receptionist or front desk staff should not wear them.

I don't there is anything wrong with it. As of matter of fact, I think it is courteous of her, so she is not bothering anyone. I also don't think front desk folks should wear them.

The woman I share my office area with has her radio playing all day on a station that would not be of my choosing, were I to choose.

I would like to either tell her to turn it down or smash it with a hammer. Depends whether I'm pre-menstrual or not.

At least you're not being subjected to Destiny's Child, Gwen Stefani, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Cher and Shania Twain all freaking day long...

Is she doing a job where she has to deal with the public, or people?

Why does that bother you? Is the music so loud that you can still hear it? I don't think it is unprofessional unless it is keeping her from doing her job:)

I wear them mostly because I can zone out and focus on my work and not other peoples conversations. I keep the volume low enough not to disturb anyone else and so I can hear my name being called. But if I don't then I catch tidbits of stupid conversation that IMO is unprofessional!

EEK nightmares of a coworker I used to have!!! I felt the same way!

I'm listening to a CD play over and over and over and over from a coworker's radio. I think the CD has 3 songs on it - all not music that would be of my choosing. I would love for her to wear headphones.

As long as the person is not in a customer service position, I usually don't have a problem with it. Several people in my office wear them, thank heavens, because I can't work with music at all! As long as they can hear you and pay attention when someone walks up, I think it's okay.

On the other hand, a supervisor in my office was actually wearing them with a player clipped to his belt, walking around the department today. THAT I find completely unprofessional. If he wants to listen to music at his desk, fine. But for a manager to walk around the office with headphones stuck in his ears should probably be grounds for a writeup or something.

OK I guess I'm being unreasonable. Like I said, I can't even explain why it bothers me (other than when I need something from her & she can't hear me calling her name).

Well, that's why you keep a handy supply of small, hard rubber balls in your desk drawer. When you want her, whip one at her head. That'll get her attention quickly enough;)

Koosh balls would be perfect (and less damaging). Or a water squirt gun (a supersoaker, if she is particularly hard-of-hearing or far away!).

ROTFL! Of course there's a door Shelley, how else would I get into work? But I would have to perfect one wicked curve ball to hit this girl.........

>Where's the fun in "less damaging"? Go hard or go home, I
>say.;)

Less risk of a potential lawsuit. I'm just looking out for Laura!

I'm thinking it depends upon what her job is. What's her job? Does she need to hear the phone ringing or someone calling her? If so, then it's totally inappropriate IMHO.
