Not online..THAT I can do with no problem.

But today, I decided to get up the courage to go out looking for new pants (mine are getting a bit loose, and I want some chocolate colored ones a well...I'm really ticked off that Venus Swimwear, where I got a nice pair last year, no longer has the chocolate color that I saw in a catalog last month, but now only black and WHITE---white pants? no way!).

My quest: new pants (black, chocolate brown, or even some nice dressier jeans, with spandex for a bit of snug and stretch, below belly-button rise, flare or bootcut, ideally no belt loops, but rather a side or back zipper on the non-jean ones.)

Mission impossible!

I spent 2 hours looking, with no luck.

So I gave up and decided to order some books from amazon.com instead.

Have I mentioned I hate shopping for pants? (I've decided that whenever I find a pair I really like, I'm buying at least two pairs!!)

I understand your pain, Kathryn! I DESPISE shopping for pants. I usually have to devote an entire stinking day to it, because no store ever has anything that fits. The waist is the problem. It seems that pants nowadays are designed to fit women whose waist is bigger than their hips.

>It seems that pants nowadays are designed to fit

Yes! That's EXACTLY what I've found. Or at least they imagine women have quite wide waists.

I found a couple of pairs of pants that fit fine, except for a gap/bulge at the waist! And I have neither a 'skinny little waist" nor "big wide hips" so what's up with that???

Another cotton/spandex pair fit o.k....except for camel toe!!

I have a small hip/waist ratio...I always have...I am built like a ruler...like a man even...no matter how much I weigh. It's simply my body structure.

I first resorted to men's levi's because they are made better for my figure and now to mid or low rise pants/jeans because the waist in traditional women's pants/jeans is one of the first things to be too tight on me. I wish I had the problem that you gals have....this makes me feel fat even though I know I am not...

PHOOEY!:p

OMG Wendy I have the same problem you do also so your not alone. I also wish I had the problems the other ladies have. I guess we both can feel fat together even though were really not.

Glad to know I'm not alone, although I am sorry you have this problem cause it stinks! :p

Maybe you should try Express. Their clothes usually run smaller. Also, when you find something you like, and it is flattering, you can save yourself some leg work by buying several in several choice colors to last you awhile. I've noticed in fashion recently, the turnaround has not been so obvious. You could get away with a flattering pair of pants for years. Whereas, it used to be so common to hear "that was so last season."

I hate shopping for ANYTHING. More often than not, I leave the mall almost in tears. My SO buys most of my clothes. How pathetic am I?:p

You may want to try getting a personal buyer at a major department store (ie. Nordstrom). Tailoring is free and so is their service...they work for the store. They will have a record of all your sizes and know exactly what you are looking for (because you told them;))......and have first dibs on the new stuff that comes into the store (they pull if for you ahead of time). They also make suggestions and recommendations based on style and fashion if you like that sort of thing. When you go to the store, they will have a rack of clothing prepared "all" in your size ready to be picked through and tried on. It can save you so much time and aggravation.

Good Luck on your search!
Robin :)

Wendy - I think she said it's free because they work for the store. I imagine they get a good commission on whatever they sell to you.

The trick is to sneak up on whatever you are shopping for. You can never, never go shopping for a specific item. Especially not in a specific style or color. You just go to the mall with a vague idea of shopping, and before you know it, you've found something that is exactly what you want. Of course, it may be 6 months after you originally wanted it.

Oh, I agree Robin. And NEVER, under any circumstances, get excited about shopping, but it's guaranteed you won't find a single thing. You have to trick the shopping Gods. You do this by actually pretending you're driving to get an oil change, or pick up your drycleaning. At the last moment, swerve your car into the mall parking lot and run like the Dickens into the mall before they see you. It helps if you hide behind those big potted trees as you're making your way through the mall. And don't show any interest in anything. Just say "oh look, pants", as opposed to "OH WOW, THESE PANTS ARE GREAT!", because as soon as you do that, all the ones in your size or anything remotely like a decent colour will magically disappear.

It's exhausting, really.:p

Kathryn, have you tried the Gap? I used to avoid them because I do not like looking the same as everyone else in the mall, but I have found their pants fit me really well. They have a variety of styles (i.e., cuts, rise, etc.), so you might be able to find something there. I also second Marla's recommendation of Express, another place I used to avoid because many of the clothes are ridiculous and trendy, BUT their pants are awesome. Again, they have several fits, rises, and lengths, so you should be able to find something flattering.

Good luck!!
Marie

>Kathryn, have you tried the Gap?

LOL! The last time I was in the Gap, it was full of size "0" clothes! And pants that were so "distressed" they looked like something I would throw out and not even give to Goodwill!

Maybe I'll have to try another mall.

But it took me a while to work up the courage to go shopping this time! I don't know if I have it in me!

I am roaring at Shelley's rendition of shopping. It's kinda an urban warfare thing. Instead of AK47's, arm yourself with VISA and Mastercard. And never, ever try shopping for something seasonal. As soon as the temp drops below freezing, the "cruise-wear" is on the racks. Just try to find a sweater. The sweaters are all put away until next July.

It's a drag! I just bought a pair that don't fit so well only because I am tall (six feet) and nothing is long enough and my waist and hips have a 13" difference and once again, most of the waist ratio to hips are huge or the hip section is made for snake hipped women ( I am so envious!). Mervyns' used to carry Lee jeans in long and that was the best I could do with a belt, but now they no longer carry long. I hate dresses!!!

Hey Tallchick, are all the women in the Orion arm of the milky way as tall as you? I bet the shopping is out of this world.

You are not alone. I equate pants shopping to bra shopping - frustrating and depressing. I don't know how many pairs of pants I've tried on that look good everywhere except for the huge gaping waist. I don't get it. I now have only one pair of pants that I will wear (the rest that sort of fit are old and too high-waisted). I am lucky that I can now wear jeans to work because I finally found some jeans (Lucky jeans) that fit well. If only they made pants too...

I haven't had luck at Gap or Express, but then again it's been awhile since I've had the courage to go back in there and try on a gazillion pairs of pants only to leave empty handed.

If you find some that fit, let us know!

Good luck,

Melissa
