I got a job

Hi everyone-

Just wanted to let you know that I got a job as a Personal Trainer and a Group Instructor at a rec center recently. I'm actually VERY nervous about the group instructor thing because I've never done it before. I'm in the midst of getting certified but having never taught an "actual" class, I'm scared out of my wits.

The reason I got this job is because they are in desperate need to fill a 2 hour slot. The usual instructor needs a break from teaching for a day(she teaches 2 hours a day, 5 days a week!!!). So I had to step up to the plate when they offered me the job. I mean, who knows if I'll get another chance like this. But as I said before, I'm scared sh##less!!

I'm set to teach an hour of step and another hour of "Abs, Back, and Stretch". At least I get to attend a couple of the current instuctors classes to learn how she does it. And let me tell you, she is a GREAT instructor!! I've been to one of her classes and I've never seen anyone any better(besides Cathe of couse!).
So, to top it off, I have HUGE shoes to fill and as a novice to boot!!
AAAUUUGGGHHH!
Thanks for letting me vent! I'll keep you posted on the outcome, good or *god-forbid* bad!

I'm curious about how you go about learning to instruct a fitness class. Do you practice teaching without actual people being there? Have you practiced with people you know? I'm just clueless about that sort of stuff, yet interested. :)

Good luck to you and I hope you enjoy it immensely :D !

Thanks to you all for your kind and encouraging words!:)
I hope you are all right and that it goes ok.

Elaine, I believe that every place is different in how they "train" their group instuctors. The main thing is to get certified to be a group instructor. But, to get certified you need to pass a written test which of course does not involve actually teaching a class. I find it strange but that's the way it is. So essentially, you can be certified to teach a class having never taught one.
I think that most places will have you attend other classes like the ones you will teach and observe and learn from the instructor(like what I'm doing). Some gyms will introduce a new instructor gradually(probably the best and most preferred way for instructor and students), by having them lead a warm up, working up to leading the class for longer sessions.

Anyway, thanks again ladies for your support. I'll let you know how it goes. I have my orientation tonight so hopefully that will make me feel more at ease.

Hi Carolyn!

I've been teaching for over ten years now and I just want to say Go Girl!!! It's NORMAL to be scared!!! I only have this advice...just be yourself. Your personality will shine through and get you through any rough patches. I know you'll do great!!!!!!
