Hey Cathe! Or anyone else who reads this post!

Firstly I will say I LOVE your workouts. Today I did Gym Style Back Shoulder and Biceps.

I have found that when I work shoulders, my traps stiffen up, and to the point where I need to stop half way through the set just to relax them. Sometimes I'll stop and consciously try to relax my neck, and that helps a bit, but it just keeps happening over and over again.

Is this normal? I will also add that I am new to working out and I am not very strong, for example I use 2kg weights for lateral raises. And this still happens! So it can't be because I'm going too heavy....

So yeah I guess I'm just wondering, is it normal to stiffen up/feel it in your traps when working shoulders, if not, is there something I may be doing wrong?

Hi there...not Cathe, but I also can feel it in my traps sometimes. Two thoughts. First, be sure you're not pulling your shoulders up as you lift...keep them down and that will help. Second, if this is happening on lateral raises, be sure you're not lifting the weights too high.

Good luck!

Yeah, I will definitely try to be more conscious of keeping shoulder down and not tensing unnecessarily.

And to be honest, I don't even think I'm lifting the weights/band high enough for the lateral raises! : s But that is probably because I'm restricting myself in some way...

It may e that your weight is too heavy. You mentioned that you were using a lighter weight, but Cathe's weight workouts are advanced, so if you're really a beginner, you might need to go lighter or do fewer reps until your muscles catch up to your enthusiasm...I've certainly been here!
