I just want to encourage anyone else who is older and thinking of going back to school to do it. I just started after 30 yrs away. I am going 3/4 time and will end up as a Para Professional for Early Education (aide) in 3 years with an Associates of Applied Science Degree. I am often the oldest in my classes so far but there are many other older students changing careers.
My goal is to start working out everyday for 1/2 hour when I get home from classes before my daughters arrive home and their sports start etc. In any event, I just wanted to convey "go ahead and give it a try" if you were thinking about returning to school. It is refreshing and challenging to say the least and I hope this will keep me young and that someday I will make a difference in a childs life. Peggy

Kudos Peggy!!!!!

ITA about jumping in and giving it a try. I used to teach a college course part-time and I loved my non-traditional aged students!

That's too cool, Peggy! I know you're going to love it. And Gayle, I have to agree about the non-trad students. I teach one French class/semester and boy oh boy do I wish I had some older students this semester. My 17-23 yr old group is too homogeneous, and they're all acting shy (I KNOW many aren't shy), and no one wants to be *that* student who participates and acts interested. Older students could care less about looking uncool, they just want to learn and not waste their time, and that's one of the things that makes them so cool!

Congratulations!!!! School is a lot more fun the second time around. I am there myself right now.

However, I would like to know what State you are in. The educational aides, even special education, do not require a degree in Alabama; just a High School Diploma.

GO PEGGY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I remember when I was in college, one of the secretaries in the college's administration office was also pursuing her B.A., and graduated at the end of my junior year. She was among the most popular, well-liked (by faculty and students) and dedicated students in the college, and those at the graduation ceremony almost brought the house down when she walked up to get her diploma.

KEEP ON KEEPIN' ON, SISTAH!

I live in Michigan and the schools require you to have completed the requirements for the "No Child Left Behind" Act..which is 60 hours..but my college does 93 hours.
I really do appreciate all the stories and support! Thank You so much!
Aqua Jock...you are trying out to be in a Cathe video right...??!!
Peggy

Good for you! When I was in college it seemed like the best students were always the older students. Congratulations!!

I love hearing this ~ congratulations!

I often think about what I'm going to do when I'm done with the kids. It may or may not involve going back to school, and the girls joke about all 3 of us being in college at the same time. :D

Good for you, Peggy! It's never too late to go back to school and I expect you're going to run into a lot of "older" students who need to re-educate for new job opportunities and careers!

Congratulations! I agree with others who have said older students are often the best. I teach part time at a community college and have definitely found that to be true. They are interested, motivated, self-confident (even if worried about a return to school), not worried about the silly little social scene, mature, and generally full of life wisdom. They are the reason I prefer teaching evening classes.

It is quite an adventure to say the least. I have tons of homework and traffic is a "bear". What I really like is how I feel I belong. Thank You so much for the wonderful comments. Peggy
