I broke my knee

Hi! I broke my rt knee. I was just starting to read about Cathe's system. I use FIRM for my workout and it is quite hard on my knees. However, i have great results. Now with my broken knee, I was wondering if Cathe's system also puts a lot of stress on knees?
Any comment would be greatly appreciated!

Elena!

I am so sorry to hear that. My first thought was "what"! But I guess it really depends on what your doctor says about added stress to the area but the first video to come to mind was the floor work of Pure Strength's Strong Legs and Abs. Can you stand for long periods, walk unassisted? Sorry about the questions but I've never known any one to break their knee.

Take care,
Angie

My goodness! If your knee is actually "broken," I doubt that you'll be able to do any lower body cardio or weight work for quite some time. This is definitely something to take up with your doctor. And you will probably have to go through rehab with a physical therapist to get back your basic strength before even thinking of doing any Cathe workouts.

Precisely, the bone is broken, just where the knee is. Therefore, I know I will not be able to do any lower body workout for a long time. However, I am worried about my knees. When it heals, and I can continue with my workouts, I want to know how Cathe’s workouts are on knees, especially weight training, which I love.:7

That sounds better! I read your previous post as your wanting to do Cathe workouts now!

As for knee-friendliness of the workouts, again, I'd consult with your PT about specific moves that might not work for you (ask about squats, lunges (forward, static, backward) and step-ups). I can only speak from my own experience regarding what may or may not be hard on knees. I have a sensitive knee, and while I find Cathe step tapes hard on it (especially the speed and some torquey moves), I generally don't have problems with the strength work.

I do usually substitute static lunges (with or without the front foot on a 4-8 inch platform) for forward lunges. I found Slow and Heavy lunges to be too stressful for my knee (the knee under tension for too long).

I recommend getting a workout like MIS to start and see how it works for you. If certain moves don't work, you can come back and ask others for recommendations for substitutions. The nice thing about weight workouts is that if something doesn't suit you, there are usually several alternatives you can try.

Good luck on a quick recovery!

Thank you so must for your insides. I really appreciate you advice! I look forward Cathe’s tapes, which I will order soon.:)

Hi! I broke my patella (knee cap) 6 years ago. It broke into 5 nice pieces, but fortunately, they did not seperate, so no surgery was required. I wore a brace for 6 weeks and had to walk with crutches. After I was able to take the brace off, I went to a physical therapist for a month, which didn't really seem to help much. My thigh muscle on the leg with the broken knee atrophied (shrank) but it quickly came back. Looking at that last sentence, I'm sure some would think that "hey, how bad could shrinking thighs be?" but it did not look good at all. Especially since the other thigh was normal size:eek:!

The only long term problems with my knee was for about a year after I could not kneel on it, that was very painful. But now I have no problems and I am a big plyometric fan. I step, run, jumprope, etc. and I can kneel on it just like pre-breakage days.

For right now, I'd would just concentrate on the upper body, especially if you can't move that joint for the next 6 weeks. After that, I'd start out with some non-weight bearing exercises like rollerblading (don't forget your pads!!!!) or swimming. Your doctor may send you to physical therapy (and I hope you get a good one who is helpful)! I hope this helps and I hope you recover quickly!

Forgot to mention, I have almost all of Cathe's tapes, and they don't bother my knee a bit. Of course, mileage may vary!!

Some of Cathe's cardio is tough on my knee but her strength training is all great. I no longer do much of the FIRM because it really irritated my knee.
