Hydrocephalus

Does anyone here have or have a child who has a condition called hydrocephalus? My oldest son, Nik, who is 3 1/2 and he has it (he has a shunt, put in when he was 1 1/2) and we had a scare last night. . . going to consult with the neurosurgeon today and I was just wondering/hoping to find someone to talk to about it.

i dont know anything about it but it sounds like you've gone thru a lot!
hugs to you and your family!

I'm not an expert on this by any means, but I don't believe it's unusual for a shunt to need revisions from time to time. I think this is especially true in children who may need shunt revisions to accommodate their growth spurts. Again, this is basically an educated guess, but I really don't think it's uncommon. ;) {{{{HUGS}}}} and please let us know what the surgeon says. I'll keep you in my prayers.

My daughter has hydrocephalus & was diagnosed when she was eleven and now she is 24... She also has a shunt. You & your son are in my prayers.

I have a friend who's son has it & she heads a pediatric group on hydro. Her name is Kim & if you want to PM me, I can give you her email address. I am sure that she would be a great resource for you. :)

thank you

Thanks guys. When my son started complaining of a headache and started vomitting last night, we were worried he was having a problem with his shunt. Luckily, everything seems to be fine. His neurosurgeon said his CT scan was good and that it is probably just a stomach bug.

It is hard b/c he is only 3 so he cannot really articulate what he is feeling when he is sick and symptoms of a shunt malfunction are things all kids experience now and then: headache, vomitting, fever. . .

I am thankful he is okay. I know there will be a point in time when he will need a revision and it is just hard not knowing WHEN that'll be. I am a bit of a control-freak as it is, and it is extremely hard for me top not have control over something that will affect my son for the rest of his life. I won't complain though because he is healthy and by far the best thing to ever happen to me.

Thanks again,
Kristin
Thanks for your hugs and well wishes.
