Hurricane Katrina – We survived!

Cathe & Fellow Catheites,

This is the first access I’ve had to the internet since my original post just before the hurricane hit us. The last thing I was able to do was post a pic of Hurricane Katrina on my PicTrail. And like I said earlier, I don’t normally post much but read a lot.

You just cannot imagine how destructive a force of nature can be. It was and still is totally unbelievable. My city (Long Beach) like the rest of the Gulf Coast has been devastated. Here’s a Coastal city guide which you may have seen/heard in the news.

With fuel prices sky high and limits of $20 or $40 dollars, I made the trip to Mobile Alabama for supplies for six families in my neighborhood. It was several days after the storm when the President visited --then finally good things started happening. Water and ice (we had 100+ degree days) initially, then some military MRE’s. Next came the Volunteers with meals and shelters. This is the end of the second week and you cannot imagine how wonderful all the volunteers have been and how the Coastal Community has bonded together to help one another. We are so grateful to all who have helped in their own ways!

I am a long time Scouter and several of our families—like so many on the Coast have lost everything. We are doing our best to help one another get thru this. DH & I are also Amateur Radio Operators (HAMs), and earlier this year our Club (MCARA) installed new equipment (Repeater) on a new CableOne Tower. It was the only one to survive Katrina on the Coast. Throughout the hurricane and these past two weeks, we were the only form of Communications on the Gulf Coast for Emergency, Fire, Police, Health & Welfare, AMR, Red Cross & WLOX TV, Shelters, P.O.D. and others. We are serving as Harrison County EOC – W5SGL and coordinate the tri-county area Harrison, Jackson & Hancock counties – which were hit hardest by Katrina.

My Mother & Father live on one side and my Brother on the other. All are ok—not so for our property but these we can rebuild & best of all, we have each other. My 3 bedroom / 3 bath house is now  1 bedroom / 1 bath and living (more like storage/salvage) room – as the front (south) rooms lost to Katrina. No kitchen but I have a Weber grill!

As important to me as my family and volunteer activities is the comradery that I feel with you Cathe & the rest of the Crew & Catheites. I have missed ya’ll so much and wanted to get on-line to read the forums – to feel normal again. I made a three hour trip to purchase an internet card based on cellular service so--here I am. My DH is sleeping next to me as I type this message from our bedroom, with the welcomed “loud” train like generator noise in the background that he installed so we could have some light and one channel on the TV --no FitTV ;-(

My workout niche looks so neglected; parts strewn across the yard. I was so proud to post the first pics of it and share with you. Oh well, I will need time anyway, since I also broke my big toe during the storm I can’t workout until that little piggy is better.

Wow! Cynthia...thank you so much for taking the time and sharing this. I am so happy you and your family are okay. What we have seen on TV is very devestating but for you to see, so much worse. I can't find the words to say...You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers Cynthia...and take care of that toe....your fitness friend...Carole

Cynthia, Your experience is so touching. I am sure Cathe as well as the rest of us are thrilled you are ok and took the time to check in with us. Take care of yourself and stay as positive as you are now.

Terri

Wow Cynthia...you have all been through so much. Thank goodness you all survived the storm. HAM operators don't get the credit they deserve at times like this....you are the backbone of communications. Volunteers who use their hobby for the good of mankind.

I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers. Stay safe...

Tammy

What an inspiring story! Your attitude in the face of this tradegy is admirable. I know others around you find great comfort in your presence!

Cynthia,
I just want to say that everytime I see the devastation on television, tears come to my eyes. We have several hurricane victims in Longview. I am a teacher. Our school has about 15 new children from the coast. I have 4 students that I am currently teaching. I am praying all of you. All the children that I have gotten are the sweetest children. I am so blessed to have them.

Cynthia / Retrofit - thank you so much for posting. Glad to have you back, and all best wishes and hopes for a good recovery from this horrible mess.

Cynthia, please add my voice to the chorus. I'm so glad you and your family are O.K. Thank you for the post.
