Hungry all the time

I don't know what to do. Now I am hungry ALL the time. I work out an hour each morning. I LOVE doing that. I eat before my workout (peanut butter on a rice cake) just to get through the workout, then I have a complete breakfast. (Eggs and fruit) By the time I get to work I am hungry and I have some almonds, later fruit and more rice cakes. Then I'm hungry for lunch around 11:00. I eat lunch and snack all afternoon. At night I am no longer hungry but I eat a good dinner and FINALLY I'm full. I am not overweight at all. Do you think there is something wrong with me or is this just how it is when you exercise like we do?

That sounds a lot like the way I eat,and I work out in the AM. My appetite finally starts to shut down at around 5:30pm, so I usually eat a very small dinner, but I'm ravenous during the day. I am careful to have a plan of what to eat, or I am tempted to eat anything to get rid of the hungry feeling. I make sure I have a supply of hard boiled eggs, fruit and raw veg, yogurt, oatmeal, etc so I have something of quality to reach for. I'm not overweight either. It's the exercise for sure, IMO.

You may want to ditch the rice cakes for something with more fiber which will keep you full longer. Also add something with fiber to your breakfast.

Yeah, try oatmeal with ground flaxseed on top. I had that yesterday at 9AM and was not hungry until right before 2PM. Pretty amazing for me since I swear I cn "graze" all day long, especially right before my period which just started today.
The added fiber is great and will keep you full, along with a little good fat too, if I do not eat enough fat, I tend to stay hungry and never really satisfied all day long!:)

Where do you purchase flaxseed? Also, are there any specific fiber filled foods that fill you up? Thanks for all the input. I'll try all your suggestions.

Jamn, my fill-me-up breakfast is a bowl of oatmeal with a half scoop of protein powder and ground flaxseed. I get my flax at the grocery store - if yours has a natural foods section you can find them there - I have Bob's Red Mill which I believe is a widely distributed brand.

Also, try to make sure you're getting some protein with each snack or mini-meal.

I think if you are exercising and eating relatively clean that it's perfectly normal to be hungry every 3 hours. I know I am - you can practically set your watch to it! :9

I to know how you feel. It can get diheartening when you are working out really hard and you feel like you are sabotaging yourself all day. I have no trouble at night with my eating but trying to control myself all day is where it can get tough. I always tell myself tomorrow is another day and not get down on myself for it.

I think I bought the Bob's Red Mill flaxseed at Trader Joe's. Other high fiber foods I like:

Kashi Heart to Heart Oatmeal (4-5 g per serving)
Raisin Bran (7 g)
Fiber One (I think it's 10 g)
Weight Watchers cereals (4-5 g, I really love the Honey Almond Crisp)
Fiber One bars (9 g)

What do you guys eat for lunch and snacks? I like your ideas for breakfast. I am ditching the rice cakes for now!

Jamn,

Sounds like you are doing great. Just make sure in each of your small meals, you have carbs, protein, and a small amount of fat. I eat this way 5 times a day. It keeps you comfortable and with lots of energy.

Re: ground flaxseed... if you like to bake, try adding ground flaxseed to healthy muffin recipes. I also add whole wheat flour, and delete plain white. Sometimes I throw in sunflower seeds, too. The fiber reallly fills me up and keeps me from getting so hungry. I can relate to having the hungries with intense exercise. It happens all the time with me!

Jamn,

For breakfast, I usually have oatmeal, regular high-fiber cereal, or a protein shake. (Love that BSN Lean Dessert powder).

I have gotten away from packing sandwiches (I think I ate PB&J at least 3x a week last year!) for work and now bring a yogurt, fig bar, 1-2 pieces of fruit, baby carrots, and some kind of snack: things like Babybel or string cheese, pretzels, a hard-boiled egg, or a Special K protein bar. This covers a mid-morning snack, too.

I get home from work around 3:30-4ish and will usually go for a light snack before dinner.

So it's fair to say I eat a lot during the day, too.
