Hummingbird ran into glass window

My coworkers have found a poor little hummer who flew into a glass window twice and is very stunned and breathing rapidly. We put the poor little thing outside under some bushes - he was totally panicked when we were close by, I'm hoping to calm him a little. Any other ideas? What can I do?

No advice, but the image of a little hummingbird flying into a window makes me want to cry! I hope he's ok! :(

He's resting on his chest now - I just went out and checked on him - looking much more bright and alert than before. I hope the little guy didn't break his wing. Pretty little ruby red throated hummer. Still breathing heavy, but they have such rapid heart rates that I cannot tell if this is unusual or not. I know very little of hummers.

I came across a sparrow that was stunned after flying into the glass window of a store. I tried to pick him up (to move him to a safer location), then found out he wasn't that stunned at all.

I'm not sure about the hummingbird, but I hope s/he comes out of it.:( The rapid breathing may just be hummingbirds in general (everything about them is small and fast), or it may be due to shock.

One suggestion: put some decals or something on your window, so birds can see that it is there, and can better avoid it.

Christine - A ruby throated hummungbird has a resting heart rate in the 600 beats per minute range...seriously!

If the little guy doesn't look better soon, you can check with a vet or local wildlife rehab facility.

FWIW, we get a group of 8-12 hummingbirds that hang out at our feeder every summer, and they seem to be a pretty resilient lot. They're very territorial and fight like crazy at times. They sometimes clip each other in mid-air...it's nuts to see.

Well, we did manage to scoop him up in a red plastic cup and get him away from the busy walk way. (he didn't protest at all - poor guy). I put him near a bush on the ground and let him recoup. I kept checking on him. He went from laying flat out to resting on his chest still breathing hard, then resting on his chest breathing more easily, then he flew off. Guess the poor little bugger was just stunned. Glad he's around to brighten another day. I love to watching hummingbirds.

Oh man, last summer, a little sparrow hit one of the the 2nd floor windows over my front porch roof and just sat, stunned, on the gray shingles. Meanwhile, my fluffy little powder puff, Bootsy (a cat, of course) just stared at the poor stunned creature from inside. I tried to shoo Bootsy away as the little thing rested, then shook itself off and flew away. Bootsy was so pi**ed at me, so that was fun.

You wouldn't think something so tiny, that hits so hard, could survive, but birds are pretty remarkable.

We heard a bird fly into my MIL's patio door one day as well, when I looked, here is was lying on the patio:( I went outside, flipped it over, it was still alive and sat there with it until it could fly away. My Mil's neighbours have a cat that kills anything that moves so I knew the bird wouldn't have a pray if that cat came around.
You really did all you could do, unless you did like I did and stayed with it to make sure no murders were around:eek: Da^n windex!

Lori:)

I put him in a spot where I could monitor him from my office window. I made sure people and other critters would stay away.
