Hummingbird feeder

MAYNARDSMOM

I just noticed some icky stuff floating in my hummingbird feeder. Emptied it & bleached it, container & the feeder nozzels. Looks like mold started growing in there. We have 3 that feed regularly from it. I make the mix myself. Am I putting to much in there? Should I not fill it all the way?

Hi Tami! I am having the same trouble. I just read somewhere that you should bleach/clean your feeder every week. I'm going to stop filling mine as much so I'm not wasting the mixture.

I just got mine clean Becky & only put about 1/4 in there. While it was down the poor little guy came looking for his lunch :(. I'm sure he'll be back later.

Is it a signof age that I enjoy keeping track of who comes to feed?

Be sure you rinse the bleach out completely. It could harm the birds. Yes, it is a mold and there is really no way to get rid of it. I just rinse my feeders well everytime I refill them (every 3 or 4 days) and get new ones every year.

Haha! I don't know if it's age or not, but the bird feeding is new to me and I absolutely pay attention to who has shown up or not. My family thinks I'm goofy! At least I haven't started naming them yet...oh wait....I guess I sort of have....there's Mister (the male cardinal) and Missus (the wife). Oh, no! Maybe I AM getting carried away! :D

Hi-

Unfortunately, yucky stuff does grow in those feeders esp. when its warmer and more humid.. but aren't those hummingbirds adorable? if this is your first year of doing it, get ready, because the same ones will come back every year w/ their kids, grandkids, etc. We have been feeding hummers for years and now in the summer we see them all day long. Its such a treat!

Are you making your own hummingbird food? Its 4 parts water to 1 part sugar. If you are putting more sugar in than that, you may be getting mold faster because of the additional sugar.

Take care, Lynn M.
