How much weight can be safely lifted over your head on ...

LOL, Mogambo! Now that's innovative. I do have 5 lb ankle wts, so around my waist that's 10 extra lbs.

I have an apron with a pocket across the front. I've thought about loading it up with wts.

I do like the hunting vest idea. I'll be it's cheaper than an $80 weighted vest. Wonder what DH will think when I ask for a hunting vest for my birthday.:p

Reread your post Erica after I posted my question and realized you had already answered.

I am glad to hear you only did 10 min. of LL before hoisting that 75lb barbell. I was ready to crawl in the corner sniveling and crying!!!:)

Also, to let you all know, you can use heavy dumbells as well to get to the poundage. I realize this is not an option for most of you, but I have 35 and 40 lb dumbells and sometimes put one on each shoulder. 35 is akward but doable, but 40 starts to get hard to lift with one arm. I still would think it is safer that way though than lifting behind the head. I actually have a Nautilus weight set with Olympic plates that I SHOULD be using, but I hate tearing myself away from the videos. Maybe tommorrow I will see what I can lift with that apparatus. I got my Olympic weight set at Costco for only $375.00. It has a leg extension/curl attachment as well as a lat pulldown bar, an incline/decline bench, a 40lb. Olympic bar with something like 300 lbs of total olympic weight. Darn good deal if you ask me....for those of you concerned with lifting heavy, maybe it is just a thought...

Here, here!

I'm right there with Angela and Briee! Petite ecto and I can only dream of lifting 70 pounds over my head. I weigh 124 lbs. so 70 is definitely more than half my body weight. But sure would be nice to do that even with 60 lbs! You all are my heroes too! :)

Someone said that to be able to increase the weight on the barbell, she would need to increase her upper body strength. What are you ladies doing to increase upper strength so that you can work you lower body harder? Are you doing tapes or additional exercises on alternate days? What's the secret? :)

Looks like I have a new goal for 2003! :7

Briee...

I'm not sure what my body type is - probably a combination of endomorph and mesomorph? I gain both fat and muscle easily. My weight yo-yos a lot (long history of eating disorders) and right now I need to lose, so I actually have extra body weight as resistance when I am doing lower body work in addition to the barbell.

My legs are very muscular - I run and spin for most of my cardio. I usually work my legs 3X/week.

I hesitated posting the weights I use because I really believe it doesn't matter - as long as you feel challenged and have enough resistance then you are using the right weight for your workout. The problem of lifting the barbell over your head is definitely an issue, though.

Love the fishing vest idea - that is great!

RE: Briee...

Erica..we must have the same body!!! I am with Erica when she says you have to lift what is right for you. I also have done alot of hiking and rollerblading for many years leading up to Cathe, so I am sure that helped my overall leg development. Plus, I am probably pretty strong on account of alot of muscle mass gained through "healthy" eating....meaning I am not on a diet and I eat to "grow". Along with muscle though, I probably have more fat on me than many of you here would find desireable, but I guess that is also what had made me strong, in a way.....

I have thick shoulders too which really helps in balancing the barbell. The poundage never really bothers me up there...

RE: Briee...

I can lift 90 pounds over my head but I also use a 40 lb wt vest=130.But only lift that on heavy days for legs.LL is usually 40 lbs.I weigh 124 also and 5ft4.and I also do what briee does sitting on the edge of the bench and lifting it up already on my shoulders.Legs is my problem area.

RE: Briee...

Shelia:

How can you state you lift 90 over your head, do squats with 130 and yet, legs are your problem area?!?!?!?!?! :D

God, makes my recent advance up to lower body work with 50 pound barbell seem like child's play and I'm bigger and heavier than you!!!!

I am, as they say in London, gobsmacked, and just think, I was so proud of myself......sniff!

RE: Briee...

Don't worry Clare, there will always be someone somewhere who does anything you do well just a tad better. Even Tiger Woods has his bad days, doesn't he?

50 lbs is great and you and I know it. :p

This is not to take anything away from those who lift 90 pounds. Heck, I'm sure I'd need a handgun to take anything away from them!! }(

RE: Briee...

Clare I should have said I have to work them hard either with endurance or a heavy workout.Because if not the cellulite will show.;(
50 lbs is great!!I have been working out for 11 years but now know what I am doing:eek:
