how much recycling

I was wondering how much recycling everyone has. I put my three bins out every other week. One for newspapers/catalogs, one for glass/plastic and another for cardboard. They practially overflow with all we have.

We have about that much. We put it out every week, and it's usually one very full bin. Could be one and a half, if we had two bins. We don't get the newspaper, though. Mainly because I hate recycling it.

The science teacher in me just had to thank you for recyling. Just think what you would be putting in the landfills if you didn't. You go girl!!!!!

hopefull:) :) :) :) :)

Our bins are always full - we can't keep up with them! We have to take them to a recycling center - our local trash collection doesn't provide pick-up. We're a family of six and our bins are always overflowing. Right now, I just started putting everything in paper bags because there's no room left in the bins. It looks awful (in our garage, but people usually enter the house that way), but I figure that it's better than throwing all of that stuff in a landfill.

I recycle so much, I also have to take the rest to a recycling center. They only pick up once per week. The sad part is, I think no one else on my block recycles. I never see anyone else put out their recycling can out.

Once, a co-worker was buying a new home in an area that recycles & she asked a few people if they did. Most told her it was too much trouble. Now, I can be one of the laziest housekeepers/procrasinators I know, but I have never felt it was too much trouble.:-(

Recycling is a passion of mine. I have 3 receptacles, a laundry basket of the same size and two large cat litter boxes (unused) for back up. We get picked up on Tuesdays and as of yesterday I was already to one receptacle. That's extreme, even for me but, well, have any of you all met Flylady? I am absolutely consumed when it comes to recycling. I strip the tiny tags off of tea bags and recycle them.

I keep a box or bag in my car for picking things up out in the world. I manage to lay claim to the empty toilet paper and paper towel rolls at the Yoga studio I frequent. I do yoga with my neice and when she sees me with one she always says she wishes she'd been the last person to use it so she could have thrown it away because she thinks it's just plain weird. Riddle me that? Of course, she's the same person who often accompanies me to my car with hands full of straws, soda cups and lids at the other studio which is next door to a Wendy's. ;)

My husband, who says he loves the envionment, is too lazy to make it as far as the garage and he throws things out. I used to grouse at him now I just police him and snatch as much as I can before it goes into the garbage. But I will pluck it out of the trash when he sneaks it past me. He's the same guy who has declared how much he loves paper towels. Who falls in love with paper towels and how is that less odd than being unable to not pick up recyclables? I don't use them, along with paper napkins or disposable cleaning mops and wipes because of the environmental impact. It's one of the few things we ever argue about. :) My philosophy is if I use my compulsiveness for good and not evil, why should anyone care? And I DO NOT need medication! :)

The way things are packaged is ridiculous. And, yep, I try to go for he ones that have the least impact regardless of cost. Don't tell my husband that, okay? :D

They don't enforce recycling in our town...in fact...when we first moved in we didn't think they did it at all so we never got in the habit...our bad...but it's SUCH a pain in the you know what! I am honestly very happy not to have to do it....

Have a great work out!

I use automotive terry towels. They are wonderful! At Costco, they come in packs of, I think, 36. I must have 300 hundred, staxhed under the sink, in the linen closet and the laundry room. They comprise the majority of my whites as you might imagine. And Judy, you know you are not spreading germs when you grab a clean one each time! I like scrubber sponges but sponges get gruesome and I have seen two very immaculate house keepers wipe the kitchen with a gnarly sponge. Scrubber sponges just don't hold up in the wash. I also use clothe napkins. My husband said it was pretentious and reminded him of his mother. But I showed him. None of them match! :) He, of course, loves paper napkins.

We have a lot, and there are only two of us in the apartment. We have to take everything downstairs to the building's trash room and put it in bins or stacks and the super bundles it for collection. In an average week, we generate:

- 5-6 plastic-handled grocery bags of newspapers (I read three papers per day)

- 2-3 grocery bags of bottles, cans, metal and plastic

- 2 large shopping bags (department-store type with rope handles) of mail, magazines and miscellaneous paper

We recycle whatever we can as 1 30 gallon bag of trash is $2.50 to get read of at the dump.

We recylce a lot.

You put me to shame. I can never use a paper towel again without guilt. My DH says he should buy stock in paper towels. Perhaps I can be rehabilitated? I 'swish and swipe' those sinks and floors with (gasp)paper towels. Will those automotive towels work? I already use cloth naplins in our bathrooms for hand towels; I can't let my family and friends reuse a hand towel, ever. The washing of them won't doesn't me in the least. How about 'handi wipes'? Are the safe for the environment ? They can be washed and reused many times too.

Judy, consider me the compulsive woman who balances you out. Once I get these ideas I HAVE to go with them but I will not stand on a soapbox. Washing and reusing is the idea. The automotive towels are great for mopping. I have white tile floor and I use my washer and I change them out so I never put a dirty mop into my clean water. I repeat until they come up clean and nearly die at how dirty they are the first few times. After I know it's squeaky, I use the same towels, clean ones, to hit the hight spots until I mop again. I am thankful I went for the brown grout! :)
