How much cardio?

Hi Cathe,

I'm new to the forum and pretty new to your workouts. I love them. They are the first ones that I feel that I get a great, hard workout. Keep up the good work!

My question is I'm trying to lose weight. I have a lot of muscle tone but I just have fat built around it. I'm trying to change my diet and eat better. I'm a pear shape, so most of my weight is in my lower body. Would you suggest more cardio than weight lifting, more weightlifting, or even of each? I always hear conflicting opinions. Right now I do cardio 3 days a week, weightlift 2 days a week and stretch and core work 1 day a week.

Any suggestions?

Thank you so much!:)

I'm not Cathe but I have had some experience in the area of doing to much weight training and not enough cardio when trying to lose weight. In the past when I was trying to lose weight I found that I would struggle so much when I didn't do enough cardio. I would lose, but it was completely frustrating. I would hit these endless plateaus and sometimes I would end up looking kind of bulky because I had developed muscle but hadn't done enough to burn the fat off the muscle. It wasn't until I stepped my cardio up to 4-6 times a week with two days of weight training that I saw more results and I saw them more quickly. I varied the type and intensity levels of my cardio workouts and I was so much happier with the results. :) :) :)

I think it varies from person to person as I am just the opposite. I'm an hourglass with a heavy bottom and only 5' tall. I've been getting results with only 2-3 days of cardio and 4-5 days of weights. It took me years to figure out I needed more weighttraining than cardio.

Hi Mommy 88! I'm not Cathe either, but I've been working out with her videos for almost three years now. Doing cardio about three times per week and weightlifting two or three I had developed some great tone, but you would never have known it before just a few months ago. I had always been eating a healthy maintenance diet, but didn't start finally burning off fat until I slashed my calories last October. I've lost six pounds a month since then and am hoping to drop another ten or fifteen before I'm done. It would never have happened if I hadn't reduced my calorie intake to several hundred less per day than I burn. If you're eating as many calories as you're burning, you won't lose, you'll just maintain. Keep working at it; I know you'll get there!

Ciddy,
What exactly are you doing for cardio 4-6 times a week? I have a similar story to yours and would appreciate some guidance. What is your workout schedule?

I've heard this a million times and it's the truth...it's 90% diet. Sounds like you have a good routine, so turn your attention to your food intake.
