Five month ago I was cleaning my bathroom with bleach. I startet getting really bad headaches and felt dizzy for hours. Even with the window open, I could not get the smell out of my house. I began to worry what these toxins might be doing to our health. I started reading online and was really suprised how many toxic chemicals are in houshold products. I got all my cleaners out the house and started making my own non toxic cleaners with baking soda, borax, white vinigar, lemon juice ,club soda ( great window cleaner !) and castile liquid soap. Not only are this cleaners are healthier, they also clean even better. How many out there are using non toxic alternative cleaners ? What do you use?
I appriciate your input or advice !!!

There was an interesting article on that in National Geographic a few months back. Fascinating issue. I use Shaklee's Basic H - good stuff and non-toxic.

Belinda,

I have been using Simple Green for years because we have a septic tank. It requires a little more elbow grease but it has been proven safe for our septic.

Yes, they do! To disinfect I use white vinigar, borax and tree tree oil. I read online you can use hydrogen peroxide to desinfct, too.

This are the books I have my recipe from:

Clean House, Clean Planet by Karen Logan.
The naturally clean Home by Karyn Siegel- Maier
Clean & Green by Anie Benthold-Bond

Thanks Belinda,
I will take a look at these books.:) :)
Again, Thanks for sharing this, I had never thought of this.

I refuse to use anything that has "warning" on the label.
I use cleaners I get from my health food store (biodegradable, usually plant based), and also do things like use hydrogen peroxide as a non-chlorine bleach.

It's said that inside air is more toxic than outdoor air because of all the toxic chemicals we use daily.

On a similar tangent, I will not use any personal care or soaps with Triclosan in (an antibacterial product that can contribute to bacteria becoming resistant). Tea tree oil and alcohol (for antiseptic cleansers) work just fine and don't contribute to bacterial resistance.

Also, a good way to disinfecting without using toxic chemicals is to steam. There are several machines available (they look almost like vaccuum cleaners) that use plain old steam to get the job done. They also work well on baked-on gunk in the oven and other tough jobs.

Hi Kathryn,
what are the names of cleaners that you buy in the health food store? In my health food store they only carry a few plant based prducts. How long have you been cleaning with these products. Did you find these personal care or soap products in the health food store as well? I really appreciate all of you imput. thank you.

I stick to vinager and water. I read an article that said a test was done on bleach vs. vinager and the vinager was as effective in killing bacteria as bleach. Target has a line of non-toxix cleaners that I like. They come in grapefruit, lavender, euculiptus, and ylang ylang.

Here is the MSDS. Didn't see ammonia; sorry that it bothers you. Bummer! Anyway, it sounds like the natural products you have found are working for you. If you have a septic like me, I will warn you about using vinegar. Vinegar will kill the good bacteria in your tank. My parents learned that the hard way; they were forced to put in another tank after they used it for years. :(

Good choice Belinda! I actually did a full house renovation with environmentally safe products (insulations, paints, woods, etc.), use non toxic cleaners. Has been great to counteract my DH and DD's allergies. And I feel better about it, that's all.

I use Earth Best, all different brands. Also to all - go to drugstore.com to their I think all natural or organic section and order from there. I get great deals, and their selection is great.

Baking soda is great isn't it? I use for a face scrub - no joke, mix a bit with your cream facial cleanser (like Cetaphil) and lightly scrub then rinse. White vinegar - a bit into a gallon of warm water to wash all wood floors. I have people clean my house every other week and they are on board with all this.

Happy cleaning!

Julie

In the workplace, any chemicals which are used must have an MSDS accompanying the product. Unfortunately, the household consumer cannot find this information on the labels of any of the household cleaners because it is not required for consumer purchases.
Contact the manufacturer for an MSDS or the store where you purchase the product. The EPA.gov site helps you determine which chemicals are toxic and why when you know the contents.

Here is a website which is also interesting...have a look:

I am with a company called Melaleuca. They have cleaning products that is very earth and child friendly and does a good job. For example, you don't have to freak out if your kid drinks some cleaner. They will have a belly ache but nothing serious. You might want to check it out. I am not exactly sure what the website is but I hope this helps.

Hi Melissa,
I went on simple green website and found butoxyethanol (6%) as their trade name and say it is non toxic and bioderable? It is a toxic chemical !!! Belinda

Another Melaleuca customer here, I love it! I've been using it for about 4 yrs now & I can't believe the difference since I stopped using Bleach/ Lysol. My dh used to get so sick whenever I'd clean, I used to have to clean as soon as he left for work & then leave the windows open to air it out. The great thing is, their products work even better than the store brands. They're all based from the Melaleuca tree (where they get the tea tree oil from).

Anyway, I use their cleaners, laundry products (which are awesome!), vitamins, and everything else. http://www.melaleuca.com (and no I don't sell it!)
