How long did it take you to complete Step Heat without difficulty?

After becoming frustrated with the choreography on Cathe's newer videos, I decided to start with her earlier ones to build a foundation. I've done Step Heat twice and the second time I was able to follow the first segment pretty well. However, once I get to the second segment, I just can't keep up! It's not that the moves seem choreographically challenging, but rather, I'm having a hard time keeping up with the pace. I ended up marching in place most of time and jumping in when I could. Any tips on how I can become better at Step Heat? Is it just a matter of practice? Thanks! :)

Yes, it's a matter of practice. No way around it! If you're having a hard time keeping up with the pace of the second segment, you can always just do the warm up, skip the first segment, and go right to the second segment. Maybe if you aren't already tired from doing the first segment, you will do better with the second. Take turns doing each segment of the workout, and hopefully soon you will see improvement in your stamina and you'll be able to do it all the way through.

Hope this helps,
Sandra

Thanks, Mar and Sandra, for your responses! Sandra, I had been thinking of doing what you suggested, re: going straight to the 2nd segment after the warm up. I do know that I had to lower my step height after the 1st segment because I was so out of breath, so maybe it's my stamina that's getting in the way with the 2nd segment.

Also, if you have a DVD, rewind, rewind, rewind. I sometimes rewind the same move over and over until I get it. I am fairly new at Cathe, and quite frankly at first the choreo brought me to tears! No kidding. I just sat down on my step during Step Blast and cried! However, I persevered and I CAN DO IT!! Just keep trying. Every time you do a DVD you will get better. Watch them without trying the moves, rewind, practice certain steps, visualize the steps in your mind, etc. It is worth it, and, the process of learning and getting the moves is fun too.

Try Step Max, it is also on the Cardio HIts, I find the choreo in this one a bit easier, but the workout is still really great!

Ivory, I thought I was the only one who ever cried because I couldn't do a video - it's reassuring to know I'm not the only one! I recently bought SJP/SB, but am waiting until I'm more familiar with Cathe's earlier step workouts before I even attempt that one! I really do need to become more accustomed to using the rewind function on my DVD player. Also, I'll have to take a peek at Step Max. Thanks for the advice and encouragement! :)

Ivory, just wanted to let you know that I tried Step Max this morning. Like you, I found this a bit easier to follow than Step Heat, although by no means was I able to keep up 100%! It probably helped that I did it on a 6-inch step and previewed it the night before. ;-)

I reviewed once before trying the workout (this was years ago - I've done that workout dozens of times since). I usually review a workout without my step and in my stocking feet in front of my TV... :)
Once you're used to Cathe's style of choreography, pretty soon you can get a new DVD and jump right into it (of course, as Cathe always says -- it's best to still review the workout before attempting it)

I first attempted step with Cathe's Low Max. I ended up getting so frustrated, as I couldn't follow any of it. I almost gave up. Then, I joined this board, and Step Heat was what others here rec'd for me to begin with, since I am so choreo challenged. And they all told me to use the rewind button, as much as I needed to. :) It worked! I love Step Heat. But, it took me over a week to get it down pat, from beginning to end. The warm up itself, took me over 3 days to get right! LOL Each day, I would do the part I knew, in its entirety. Then, I'd "add on", a bit of the next segment, to learn it. Each day, I'd add on a bit more.

On week 2, I was able to do the entire tape from beginning to end, with no extra breaks. Now, I have been doing the other 2 on the Classics dvd, plus Cardio Hits, KPC, and a bunch of her other workouts. Starting with her earlier step routines, helped me learn the basic moves. You'll see them again in later tapes. So, it gets a bit easier, at least with the choreo.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply, beachgerrrl! Your post is yet more reassurance that, with practice and use of the rewind button, I should be able to catch onto Step Heat in relatively no time. I plan on doing it tomorrow (Saturday) when I have plenty of time to use the rewind function (I work out in the morning before work during the week, so it's not the most practical to rely upon the rewind function then).
