How long before split routine?

Hi Cathe,

I am getting back into weights and doing MM 2x/week (only about 2 weeks so far). How long do you suggest I do full body workouts before I go to a more split routine such as GS, PS or S&H series? Thanks and I am looking forward to your upcoming workouts!

Hi Thea! You don't HAVE to go into splits if you prefer total body workouts. But if you prefer split routines you can start right away. Use lighter weights initailly and then once you know what is coming your way, challenge yourself so that you are really working to complete each set of each exercise. Good Luck!

Hello to Cathe and everybody,

Although I did the course of training to become an AFFA personal trainer, I feel that I need to learn so much more. So, Cathe, what you are saying is that I can keep all my strength and muscle tone if I do two heavy whole body workouts a week?

I do belong to a nearby gym, and sometimes I take step classes there. The manager of the gym gives a wicked double bench step class every Wednesday night, and he also added another class for himself on Monday nights called Nautilus Strength. The NS class was the best weight workout I had ever done.

I just ordered five more of Cathe's DVD's, and I can't wait to get them. They are:

Muscle Max
Rhythmic Step, MIC....
Kick Max
Imax 3
Imax 2 plus cardio and weights

I was also thinking of ordering the Slow and Heavy DVD for a three split routine. I have a four room condo, and I don't have the room for an exercise ball, a high step, and much more equipment.

Right now, I have the club sized exercise step with three risers, a set of dumbbells, and a weider junior sized barbell plus a dynaband.

Should I think of struggling to make the room for a high step?

Thank you, Cathe, for this forum.

Thank you, Cathe! I actually DO prefer split routines, so I will take your advice and start lighter, moving up in weight as able! Thanks for ALL that you do!

Hi Caitlin! I think you can keep your strength by doing full body workouts but these workouts would need to be constantly varied to bring new challenges to various muscle groups. Personally, I think mixing it up is best. After about 4 to 6 weeks of all total body, try doing 4 to 6 weeks of split routine workouts.

You are fine with the equipment you have for now, but I think you will need to eventually get three sets of dumbbells with various weights (ie: 5 pounds, 8 pounds, 10 pounds). I also think your barbell should allow you to increase your weights up to about 60 or 70 pounds to keep you challenged. I'd love to see you get a stability ball. Yes, it may take up space, but the the benefits it provides (and at such a very reasonable cost) can't be beat.

Good Luck!

Dear Cathe,

Thank you for all your hard work and creativity you put into your website and workouts. I think that you are the best out there. I have been doing step for years, and I love your advanced DVD's.

I am pretty sure that I can buy more plates for my Junior Weider Barbell set, so I can up it to 40 or 50 pounds. I am kind of short, only 5'2", and I doubt I can go up to sixty or seventy pounds. I also have been working out with weights for years and years, although I have never lifted really heavy.

Marcus, the manager of my gym, said the same thing you have. He said you have to change your workouts to shock your body, as it will become accustomed to doing the same thing over and over again. So I am pretty sure he can going to vary his very intense Monday night Nautilus Strength class, and I will also be getting your Muscle Max very soon. I can't wait until I get the other DVD's I ordered.

I was thinking about purchasing your Slow and Heavy series or your Power Hour one. What do you think?
