How fast did you gain weight?

I just found out last week that I'm pg. I'm only about 4.5 weeks, but I swear my clothes are fitting tighter already, and my waist is getting thicker.

Is that normal? I'm reading all kinds of stuff about how you should only gain 6-11 lbs in the first trimester, etc...

Yup, first thing that happens is you lose your waistline. Your clothes start to fit differently because your body shape starts changing very early. Don't worry, that's normal. In my first trimester I gained 15 lbs and was really worried about it because I knew a lot of people who had gained 0-5 lbs in that time period, so I was sure I was on track for a 75-lb weight gain. In the end I gained 42 lbs over my whole pregnancy, but most of it came off pretty quickly after I had my daughter.

Whew! OK thank you!

I've decided to stock up on maternity clothes now, rather than go through the phase where I have to size up and then buy more. Maybe a little ridiculous, since I'm thinking I won't show for awhile, but I'm hoping that will save me $$ in the end.

Oh yeah, the waistline disappears really fast! I gained 20 lbs per trimester with each of my babies. Women in my family are very petite and thin, but gain a lot during pregnancy. The weight came off both times within a year.
I had to wear maternity pants by 10 weeks both times since nothing else was comfortable anymore. You may not have to size up until the last six weeks or so, so don't buy anything too big. I was very comfy in size M (even at 175 lbs) until the last 5 weeks, and then I had to go up to a size L- the shirts didn't cover my belly anymore, and the pants were cutting off the blood supply to my upper half! Size L was a little hard to swallow, I have to say. :)

Congratulations on your pregnancy. I didn't notice the waistline disappearing until about 4 1/2 months at which point I began to look as if I had put on a few pounds. I didn't look pregnant yet, just less slim than usual. This is the point at which I went out and bought a few maternity items. But given that this past summer was touting empire waist fashions for juniors, I was able to buy a lot of sale items out of the Juniors section of the store.

My biggest weight surge so far occured between 7 1/2 - 8 months--5 pounds in 2 weeks! There is no way I can wear those Junior shirts now as they are too short in the belly. I was able to wear them up until about 7 1/2 months.

I didn't gain anything until the early second trimester, but every woman is different. Some spread it out more evenly over 9 months. I'm one that moves in surges, and most of my gain has been in the third trimester. My first surge was around 6 months; then again at 7 1/2 months. I'm down to the wire now (Nov. 18) and gaining rapidly. So most of my weight gain has been at the end of pregancy. At 36 weeks, I'm up 27 pounds from my pre-pregnancy weight. But again, every woman is different depending on bodily frame, genetics, lifestyle etc. I have to say that I have certainly enjoyed this plump, round season of my life. And I have given myself full permission to love the pregnant, round, and full earth goddess that I have become. I say, embrace it, but maintain your good habits at the same time so that the amount you gain will be natural to your body.

Many CONGRATS to you!

I remember that bloat feeling...not fun! I, too, went out and got a couple items maternity. I did not want to spend too much though so I only purchased a couple but I wore that stuff everywhere after 8 weeks or so.

I wish you a happy, healthy 9 mos. I am sending sticky vibes your way! :D

congrats to you!!

everyone is different for sure, and everyone's body responds to pregnancy different. i gained 10lbs the first trimester with my first baby but only went from a size 2 to a 4. i did not wear maternity clothes until i was 6 months pregnant. i just showed differently b/c i have a very long torso. also, i gained 18lbs thru the whole pregnancy - just put on the majority in the first trimester.

is this your first pregnancy from what i hear, you tend to show sooner the 2nd pregnancy. i am about 5 weeks along too, so i hope to chat with you more during our pregnancies. congrats again

Congrats!!

I'm 10 weeks preggers now and by week 3 I was already having trouble buttoning my pants and I've never had a belly or gut. Now I'm in full on maternity pants even though I've only gained 5 pounds. Everyone is different, I think if you've already had a baby then you'll pop faster. This is my first but I have a tilted uterus so my under belly popped as soon as my uterus started to swell at least that's what my Dr thinks is going on.

No worries we're all different there is no specific time to pop...you'll show when you show. I'm just starting to round out a bit (finally) where as before I looked like I ate too much :\

Personally I choose to go with maternity pants rather than going up a size in regular pants. The elastic waist in maternity pants are way more comfortable and can be less expensive. Check out Old Navy they have great deals!

Good luck! :)

I've gained about 5 lbs so far from my pre-pregnancy weight and I'm 21 weeks. I lost some weight initially due to "all-day sickness" Now I'm dealing with my legs/butt/arms getting smaller due to losing muscle mass from not working out as intensly as I did before, and my belly and boobs getting bigger. My husband teases me that I look like a starving child from a third world country :) It's amazing how different everyone really is. What's important is that the baby is healthy and growing normally. Best of luck to you and your little one!!!

I am at 9 weeks now and have already gained 7 lbs! This is really different from my first pregnancy. I had twins the first time around and actually lost more than 10 lbs in the first trimester because of hyperemesis. This time there is only one and though I am constantly nauseated, it seems that the only thing that helps the nausea is to eat. I am afraid I am going to be as big as a house. Because I had severe preeclamsia the first time around, the weight gain is even more worrying to me. I guess I'll just have to buckle down in the second and third trimester.
