You can buy it usually at health food stores, though some supermarkets might carry it.
It contains good fiber, but especially Omega-3 fatty acids (which are the same ones that are in fish oil).
There are two types of flax seed: the stuff you usually find is dark brown. There is also a "golden flax" (Now foods brand has a good price on this, available in health food or natural food stores or coops) which I think tastes much better. Kind of nutty. The darker flax tastes a bit bitter to me.
For best nutrition, get the whole flax seeds and grind up a 1/2 cup of so at a time. You can buy pre-ground flax, but it doesn't last as long, and since the seed is broken down already, it oxidizes and loses some of its nutritional value, and goes rancid, sooner. Oil lasts even less time.
You can also buy cereals and baked goods with flax in. Natural Ovens of Mannitowoc (sp?) has a whole line of breads and muffins and cookies that contain ground flax seed.
