How do you film your videos??

This is just something that boggles my mind while I work out. Do you work in segments and keep perfecting them?? Is there someone shouting "CUT"? Or do you do the whole work out start to finish more than once and edit the best of each?? You have some quite "fancy foot work" in your videos and it just keeps me wondering. Especially in either the High Step Challenge or the Muscle Max -- the NEVER ENDING plie squats, how does everyone maintain such good form?? I whimp out. The videos are flawless, which is what gets my curiosity. Are there ever bloopers???

Hi Fitnessfanatic! We have quite a bit if rehearsals before we actually film so that the routine flows well and we all know it like the back of our hand. That makes it so that things go more smoothly on film day. It seems we will always have to cut somewhere for one reason or another (ie: technical difficulties, bathroom break, etc.) but we really try to go all the way through if possible. It makes the edit much easier and the overall flow of the workout more natural and true to the moment. To keep us from "cutting" we will have a few camera angles going at the same time. That way, if one of us on the set makes a mistake, we have the possibility of another camera catching the shot from an angle that does not show the mistake so that we don't have to stop. Sometimes we are not able to perfectly fix a mistake but we try the best we can to make that happen.

Oh and yes, there are bloopers but we edit them out or reshoot the footage (ie: the fly that would not leave the set, the tongue tied moments of explaining an exercise, the hair that would not stay out of the eyes, lipstick on the teeth, an outfit that just didn't cut it, a coughing attack that needed water immediately, the photographer who tripped on one of the camera chords and shut down production, etc) :7

you KNOW people would pay GOOD MONEY to see a cathe blooper dvd!

cute work out clothes are good for AT LEAST an additional 10-15 calories burned!

I really like that you try to film the workout in one 'take'...I know that others don't. You have been able to work in enough rest time that I feel that I can keep up with you, without constantly pausing. I also like to see you sweat with me...makes me feel like we are working out together!

I have recently started doing some of your workouts, that a friend has been kind enough to loan me. I am really enjoying your style, and it's been a great new challenge for me. I'm thrilled that I've just about got all of your choreography on LowMax down, after doing the workout only 3 times. :)

Speaking of filming and sweating: with all the lights, how hot does the studio get when you're filming?

I did a workout yesterday, and didn't have my air conditioning on so it was about 80 degrees in the room, and I was dripping sweat!

Our air conditioner is broke at our house, too, & it's about 80 degrees in my living room also. I have always wondered how Cathe & other fitness instructors survive under those hot lights. My exercise clothes get so wet I can wring them out!

Mine didn't break, I just don't use it unless its really hot, and usually keep it at 80 even then (except lately, my old, dibetic cat seems to think it's too hot and needs it!).

I'm just wondering what temp it is when filming, because they've got the hot lights, but they might air condition to compensate.

I can't be positive about this, but I'll keep looking for the source. Seems a while back, I read something on this site - maybe an interview with Cathe (???)and they were talking about the lights. I recall the article saying that those lights can raise the temperature to about 100 degrees in the studio.

Ah-ha! I found the link:

You would have to think that there is some super air-conditioning goig on to keep the filming safe - for the talent on and off camera.

I certainly wouldn't expect Cathe and crew to be bouncing around in 100 degree heat just to make a workout tape!

It is possible to work out in 100 degrees, by the way, and as long as you pay attention, it's quite safe. I live in Arkansas, and it's a pretty regular event around here for it to reach that in the summer for several weeks in a row. When I used to run, I'd just go. And I do yardwork all summer in it. My dad is in construction, and he deals with it all day long. The key is to drink plenty of water so you don't get dehydrated, and also make sure you're getting enough nutrients so your body has what it needs under the more strenuous conditions. And then come home, take a cool shower, and REST. :D

I couldn't believe how muggy and sticky the D.C. summers could be - oftentimes right up until the end of October!

"...by the way, and as long as you pay attention, it's quite safe..."

I agree. I spend a lot of time outside during the summer, working my horse. Even so, I wouldn't expect it for making a fitness video, especially when the indoor climate can be easily controlled.
