How do you feel about Air purifiers?

I am curious what peoples experience with air purifiers are? Are they worth the money? We heat with wood and I'm worried about my children breathing in the smoke so frequently, it can't be good for us. So I thought maybe a purifier would help. What do y'all think?

Hi Heather,

I always wondered about them, too. My sister bought one of those Ionic Breeze ones from Sharper Image and it's amazing how much it helps. You should see how filthy the filter gets.

She bought it when she purchased some expensive bird because people told her the smoke would be bad for the bird. Now if she would only listen to the people who tell her how bad the smoke is for her!

I can only speak from my own experience, but it has helped me TREMENDOUSLY. I was having lots of allergy problems, so I bought an Oreck from one of their stores. It was a buy one, get one 1/2 off sale, so I got two. It was expensive(~$500), but so worth it. My allergy problems decreased significantly. I have one in my bedroom and one in my daughter's bedroom. If I remember right, I think they had a 30-day money back guarentee, so you could return it if it doesn't work for you. Hope this helps!

I have a Hunter Hepa filter air purifier and negative ion generator in my bedroom. I think it helps my allergies. When I change the filters (sometimes not soon enough) they are FULL of cat hair and dirt and guck. I'd rather that be in the machine than in my lungs!

I have three of the Sharper Image Ionic Breeze air purifiers in my house. I love them. They really get the dust and gunk out of the air. They're so easy to clean and take care of. I don't regret my purchase.

We bought one from Hamilton Beach (on sale at Amazon.com with free shipping!) a little over a year ago. Our house is about 100 years old and it had an odd, sour smell in the bedroom. We chalked it up to the age of the house, but when we plugged in our air filter, it said the air was absolutely filthy! I closed the door to the bedroom and let the thing run for a few hours-- the air smelled really fresh when I went in later.

We got to looking around and found an old leak in the attic that was draining behind the bedroom walls. It was full of mold! We fixed the leak etc. but still run the ultraviolet light on the air filter-- from what I've read, it is the only thing that will kill mold spores as the float around and keep them from reproducing.

It has a screen on the front that tells you the quality of the air, and you can set it to run on automatic where it adjusts itself acc. to how much mold, dust, etc. is floating around. I love it, and it makes a big difference!

HTH,

I forgot to say that we heat our house with wood, also and haven't noticed a lot of smoke getting in except around the front door. However, the purifiers are supposed to work with cigarette smoke too, so it would probably help:)
