i think competing in a race would be a great goal/motivator for me. i only know of a few. what websites would i go to to find out more? i'm near ST.Louis,MO. i love the idea of a trail run too. that would really bring back the memories of running on cross country team in high school. i was very slow, but those are some of my fav. times. i don't think i would be ready this yr. i would probably plan for next year, but its still great motivation.

www.active.com is one place to start. Just type in the location and type of event in the "Find things to do" box, and you'll get a list of events.

There are also many local and regional running clubs across the US that list regional events. I found mine ( www.secondwindrunningclub.org , just to give you an idea of what the sites are like) by doing a web search with key words something like "Illinois 5k" or "Illinois races" then visited the sites listed until I found this one.

OH YES! Kathryn is right in that a local running club will have tons of insight and suggestions. I found MY local running club thru Facebook and it's been a WONDERFUL experience!!!

thank u all

that was really helpful. what ifounv made me laugh to myself. one of the races this past july was in a park nearby. i could literally walk across the highway from my house to the park. lol. thats not safe, seriously in a car its like 2 mins, ha ha. and kids can enter too and its 2/4 bucks a person. doesnt get better than that.

Another thing: when you compete in races, look around near the registration tables, as other local races often advertise with flyers and handouts (some smaller races that might not end up being advertised in many other places).
