How Did He Propose?

Just a general inquiry here for all of you ladies (and gents!) to share how your SO proposed to you. Was it a big spectacle? Was it more intimate and private?

The reason I ask is because my boyfriend and I, over the past few months, have really been talking about taking the next step. And in the midst of our talks, it got me to thinking about all things romantic and I feel like a flighty little teenager, daydreaming and doodling on my papers about weddings and lovey dovey stuff.

So, I thought that maybe there may be some out there who would like to share their romantic stories!!!

My husband (then boyfriend) proposed on a Friday night after work, just the two of us at home. He presented the ring in the middle of a handmade (styrofoam) lollipop, complete with a fabric rapper, stick, and ribbon around it. I'm a lolly girl and this just put me to tears. How he constructed this thing without any awarness by me is amazing. We were both so nervous, but it was awesome :)

My DH took me to a nice restaurant in Annapolis, MD, right on the water. I didn't suspect a thing because I thought he wasn't ready to get engaged. Later after dinner, we took a walk along the sea wall at the Naval Academy. After about the third time along the wall, I started to get a little suspicious (and my feet were aching). He finally sat me down on a bench and popped the question. Poor guy, I never noticed how nervous he was the whole night, but he will tell me now that he was a wreck! ;-)

Debbie,

That sounds absolutely adorable and incredibly creative. I have always thought that a thoughtful, personal and more intimate proposal would be the most romantic. Just my thoughts, though some people, like my sisters, want a huge ordeal!!! We're talkin'(planes flying banners overhead or a JumboTron at a football game) huge!!!

Thanks for sharing!!!

My DH took me to dinner at one of our favorite casual restaurants on a Friday night - nothing was out of the ordinary. Except that he was acting really stressed out, like he had something serious on his mind. Little did I know he was just working up the nerve to propose! ;) After we got back to his house, the song "So Happy Together" by the Turtles was playing, and he got down on one knee and said "and I think we would be so happy together. Will you marry me?" And the rest, as they say, is history. It wasn't anything unique or fancy... but it was perfect. :)

I proposed to DH;-)

Yeah, we haven't really done ANYTHING traditionally. We had talked about marriage a lot and we both knew that we wanted to get married, I just suggested that we do it that summer instead of waiting. So, it only left us with a little less than 3 months to plan, but we wanted a simple wedding anyway. It was a big surprise to our family and friends though. We were highschool sweethearts, (pauses for "awww...."), and only 20 years old.

For a more romantic story my BIL proposed to my SIL by taking her up north to a B&B for the weekend and had called ahead to have the owners sprinkle rose petals all over the room and spell out "Will you marry me" on the bed. He's a grand gesture kind of guy:)

>to me on a horse in front of about 500 people!!

Aawww...he road up on a horse?!! For me, because I love love love horses, a gesture like that would be one of the most romantic things on earth!

It was no suprise for me. We had been discussing marriage and my uncle who was a jeweler, had designed and made a ruby ring for me. I hadn't seen it yet though. DH took me to dinner at a very posh restaurant (we were poor college students at the time) and proposed officially over dinner and gave me the ring.

Fun thread!
So, my then boyfriend and I had been dating for about a year or so. 6 months into our relationship, he got orders to move to Egypt for a year (he's in the army). Of course I was upset and hoping he would propose before he left. He didn't. We thought he was going directly to Egypt after about a day layover on a post in North Carolina (which ended up lasting about 2 weeks total). After a few days of hanging around waiting to leave, it just 'struck him' that we should be engaged (he later told me). So, he rented a car and drove up 6 hours to Maryland. I was at work that day, of course depressed (I had no idea what his plan was and I didn't think I'd see him for a year)! I had my back turned to the counter (I worked at a college) and one of my co-workers yelled "hey, did someone send Carolyn flowers"?? It was my birthday and I just figured he had arranged for flowers to be delivered. When I turned around, there he was, flowers in hand, and a big smile on his face! I jumped up and immediately ran over to him (in front of a BIG crowd of students). I pulled him aside and he told me that he had permission to spend the week with me before he left. I was so excited I ran to my boss's office to ask if I could have time off. When I returned and we were getting ready to leave, he said "oh, I forgot something" (now keep in mind this is in the middle of a BUSY registration office and tons of students were in line). He got down on one knee in front of EVERYONE and proposed right there. I think I started to cry and when I finally looked around me (after saying yes of course!), all of the students in line had crowed around us along with everyone in the office. Everyone was clapping and cheering!! It was quite memorable! :) :)

It was Memorial Day weekend (edited to say --I meant LABOR Day weekend ...wow, I must have been really drunk!) and we'd been out partying. When we got home, I slurred, uh, I mean, said, "Do you think that we'll ever get married?" (We were invited to three weddings within a 5-month period, and I think we'd seen one of the couples while we were out.) He said, "Why would I ask you to marry me, when, anytime anyone brings up marriage you go into this long tirade about how outdated it is and you see no use for it." And I said, "Well, I think I'd like to." And he said, "Okay, so do I." Three months later we were married.

Real romantic, huh? But about a month before the wedding we went out to our favorite romantic restaurant for dinner, and he gave me a beautiful pair of opal earrings that he had had made from a pair of small cufflinks that had belonged to his great-grandfather.

We've been married for 17 years.

Right there with you TeTe. DH and I dated for 13 years and were absolute best friends. One day we just started talking about "well IF either of us would ever get married it would HAVE to be to the other because our families wouldn't allow anyone else in the picture" type thing. We're both lawyers and we had our calendars with us. The conversation went along the lines of, "well I couldn't do it this weekend becasue I have a Supreme COurt brief due" or "I can't do it then because I'm in trial the following week" - how about this weekend? At our mutually convenient first available weeknd 8 months later we got married - then both went back to work the following MOnday. How's THAT for romance!?

I NEED a Cathe Roadtrip - BAD!!!!

On the 9,000 ft point on Mount Halleakala on Maui in Hawaii. I found out later that he was going to do it at 10,000 ft but I got altitude sickness and we had to stop so I could throw up (how romantic). We stopped a thousand feet lower to do some site seeing and that's when DH popped the question.

<<He dressed in a Knight-in-Shining-Armor costume and rode up to me on a horse in front of about 500 people!!>>

A former co-worker of mine did the same thing for his girlfriend about 15 years ago. I got recruited to go and take pictures. It was a fabulous proposal, but they never made it to the alter though...

We went back to work the following Monday, too, but only because we weren't leaving for our honeymoon until the next Thursday, which was Thanksgiving.

My husband has a friend who has a Sesna (sp?) so he told me we were going with him (the friend) and his wife to go for a ride. We went up in the plane when the sun was setting. We flew over the church and the pilot (who also went to our church) pointed it out. I then looked out the window and saw "Well, BeBe?" (that's what my DH calls me, BeBe) spelled out in Christmas lights really big in the yard of the church! I looked at my then boyfriend, and he popped open the box with the ring in it, it had a light in the top of it so it lit up the ring, and then he proposed. It was awesome. We got married 3 months later.

These are all so nice:)

My SO recently said to me "Shell, I won't ever marry you." Does that count? Sort of a reverse proposal? No? Oh well:p

I love all of the creativity that everyone is sharing!!!

I may "accidently" leave this thread open on my computer for my SO to "stumble" across.....}(
