hot flashes?!?!?

it seems like every night in the 7 pm to 9 pm range, i will get really hot, even a little sweaty, if i do small things around the house like pulling laundry out of the dryer. i will sit down to fold the clothes, and i am burning up. it feels internal. i have just started noticing this in the past week or so. now, the whole picture is this...i live in northern georgia, and the nights are very cool, so i don't think it is the temperature. in the past 2 weeks, i have been doing very consistent cathe workouts (doing an intensity series rotation). the last bit of information is that at 27 i had a hysterectomy, but i was able to keep my ovaries to avoid premature menupause...

the question is, do you think my body is running hotter because of the consistent exercise i have been doing lately? or, could i possibly be pre-menopausal? mentally and emotionally, i don't feel i have changed at all, so i don't think (and am hoping) that i am not pre-menopausal. maybe it is just a phase?? what do you ladies think?

Well, how old are you? When I was going through menopause I had terrible hot flashes. I would describe them as feeling like you're on fire and burning up from the inside out. I started having hot flashes in my early forties and they lasted for a period of years. It's different for everybody, though.

Are you having other symptoms, like difficulty sleeping or mood swings?

When are you due to see your gynocologist? I would definitely talk to h/her about it.

Michele

i will be 37 in december. i don't seem to have any other symptoms such as mood swings or trouble sleeping (besides the trouble i have had sleeping all of my life). i am due to see the gynecologist in january, so i should speak to him regarding this. i am truly hoping that this is the effects of workout out more regularly, and that my body is starting to burn more that it used to. my body usually reacts to exercise fairly quickly, but i don't know if 2 weeks is enough time for that to happen. i thought menopause starting more in your mid to late 40s, but maybe my hysterectomy will cause it to start earlier than normal... if it is pre-menopause, i hope my boyfriend is ready...poor guy...

Did you have a complete hysterectomy or did they leave your ovaries intact? If they took your ovaries then you are indeed post menopausal. It would make perfect sense that you are having hot flashes. What did your doctor say about your surgery?

Michele

my hysterectomy took everything but the ovaries. my doctor told me he did not need to take the ovaries, and this would keep me on a normal track for menopause. so, i will definitely talk to him about this in january.

That's good! You may be somewhere in the pre to peri-menopausal phase. I've known people who experienced symptoms even earlier than that. There's a wide range of normal here. I would try to keep a record of your symptoms--the frequency, duration, and intensity. It could easliy be that it's nothing to worry about. ;)

Michele

thanks for the advice. i will keep record of it so i have a good time line of symptoms for my doctor. i have to say, this makes me realize that i as hard as i try to hold it off, i am getting older...i don't know if i am ready to deal with this sort of stuff yet...i still feel so young inside...i guess i better really get busy with my workouts to keep body in shape for this aging thing that is starting to happen...

Trust me, you will always feel young on the inside. I'm 50 and I still feel like a kid (and some would say I act like one too;) ). Keep up with your w/o's--it's the best thing in the world. And don't forget to use #30 sunblock on your face everyday! LOL!! People seem genuinely surprised when I tell them my age and I think it's because I take good care of my body.

Michele

Michele, you are SOOOO right about the sunblock! And don't forget the rest of your body. The more sunblock the more places the better.

Right you are, Nancy!! I put sunblock on all exposed areas of my body--face, throat and upper chest, hands, and arms. It's as much a part of my daily routine as brushing my teeth!

this is why i love these forums. getting advice and inspiration from women like yourself is priceless. another way to keep youself young is with laughter. i laugh at myself more than anyone else every day, and that helps alot.

btw...you may not have seen my response to your post on the thread regarding the woman's dh that is still sleeping when she leaves in the morning. my reply to your post was that i love reading what you wrote there about tucking the covers under his chin and giving him a kiss. it is nice to hear women say nice things about their SO, and makes me want to go give my man a big hug. thanks for putting a smile on my face this morning.

Thank you Smartyjones!! I'm always happy if I've inspired someone to look lovingly upon their DH/SO. I know when I'm nasty to my DH, he's nasty right back; when I'm kind and nice, he is too. I really believe that we get what we give most of the time. I'm constantly learning this lesson. It's all in the striving!;)

I felt like I was getting hot flashes, too. Not often, though - about once a week or once every 2 weeks. I talked to my OB about it and she said it could be happening because I take BC pills and skip the "empty" pills (or whatever you call them) so I only get a period every 2-3 months. I may stop skipping pills if it gets worse. I've also noticed I get "flashy" :) more often during TTOM. BTW - I'm only 34.

I am 39 and have premature ovarian failure. A bit of history with endometriosis starting in my 20s. So a couple of surgeries and lots of gyn problems. Two years ago I started to notice hot flashes that were terrible along with night sweats and sleep disturbance on my week off the pill (which I still take for endometriosis). I talked to my gyn and she said oh that's normal. It got worse. So since I am a Family Nurse Practitioner, I stopped my pills and waited and believe you me oh it was horrible. I waited as long as I could stand it which was about 30 days and then had my lab draw my hormone levels. Sure enough it was right there in black and white my ovaries are not functioning. My gyn was shocked. Anyway I'm now on a stronger pill and only go off them every three months or so- but still have some occasional hot flashes night sweats, etc. esp on that week off. The other thing is I have bone loss and that is why it is important to pursue these things. I am now also on fosamax to rebuild my bones. Please check this out.

wow, i didn't know that it could get that bad...i am sorry that you have had so many problems that this. i feel bad that i was complaining about a raised body temperature at night. i guess i am getting into that age now where i have to start thinking about these things. i am going to talk to my ob in january about it if it continues. since having a hysterectomy almost 10 years ago, i have not had to deal with any "female" problems of any sort. so, this is reminding me that i am still a woman.

Ya know, as bad as it all sounds I realize that there are much worse things that I could have. So I am thankful still. But yes talk to your doctor and if the problem persists insist on testing.

:)
