hot flashes and weight loss

I'm 50 and 1 month years old and have started having major hot flashes. I'm glad the periods are gone, but I'm so darn hot!!! However, I think it is boosting my metabolism. I'm eating the same but have lost 3 pounds in my abs/hips/thigh area most notably, although also in the face (which I don't like too much-scrawny little old lady face/neck.) Has anyone else had weight loss occur with onset of menopause??? I'm not complaining!!! Hopefully this will be an inspiration to all you 40 something perimenopausals that yes, you do finally lose a bit of that horrible peri weight gain.

Just wanted to pop in and say that a couple people I work with drink a glass of soy milk a day and it works WONDERS on hot flashes.

Sorry I can't answer your question since I'm not at menopause yet (I'm 45 so it could be any time - my mom went through it at 38!).

I'm 49 and at the major hot flash stage too. Aside from the flashes when I get soaked in perspiration, I'm so hot all the rest of the time too! It's been like that for a couple months now.

I haven't lost any weight but then again I've noticed that I am able to eat more without gaining. With all the excessive heat we're generating I'm sure we must be burning extra calories. I don't know if that's true, but that's what I'd like to believe :p

NO FAIR !

I went through the hot flashes years ago and didn't lose - now I am nearing 50 in a couple of months and am adding like crazy.

Please pass you hot flashes on to me - maybe it will work this time :7

I went thru menopause and had exactly the opposite experience. Did not experience many hot flashes but did gain weight. The only hot flashes I would get were when I was in a stressful situation like making a presentation! But no night sweats and I could get irritable at times but in general it was a smooth transistion. But like I said I did gain weight but lost it quickly afterwards.

Wow! I am glad I am not alone in the hot flash department. This is almost a daily occurrence for me! My husband tells me that my thermometer is definitely off. :) The only good thing about summer is that the A/C unit in our bedroom is installed above my head. It blows ice cold air on me ALL NIGHT LONG! It is heaven! :) My other trick is the chemical cold pack in the pocket trick! :) I will have to try the soy milk...this isn't the first time I have heard that about soy. I wonder if the hot flashes do correlate to an increase in your metabolism or just hormones or both?

What an encouraging post! I am 47, and have gained about 10 pounds in the last six months that seem to refuse to budge. I am starting to have what seemt to be little mini hot-flashes that last just a few minutes - they are very weird! Periods are still regular though for the most part. I have always been pretty thin, and having to go up a size has been a real pain - any tips on weight management during this time would be greatly appreciated! In the past I've done the two week boot camp phase of South Beach and dropped 7-10 lbs without difficulty - this time around it was a nightmare - I felt horrible and dropped only 3 lbs - this is truly something different for me. Exercise is stable - I've been doing Cathe for years and have been upping my weight lifting, mainly because my knees can't take the high impact - thank goodness for the spinning bike.

All the best,
Colia

How interesting. I've been battling hot flashes for about a year (still perimenopausal) and have experienced weight gain. I've taken my temperature during a hot flash a few times thinking it had to be through the roof -- paradoxically it was low. Go figure. It's such an individualized experience with many commonalities, but with many differences too. Deb
