horrible event

On Saturday afternoon my 4-year old and I witnessed a fatal accident. I have never seen anyone die before and I keep seeing it over and over. I had taken Gabe for ice-cream and we were getting ready to leave and I was buckling him in his seat. The way I was kneeling on the backseat I could see directly out the back window. A man in a Blazer was going to turn into the parking lot of the ice cream place. He sort of swerved/hesitated and then decided to go and he drove right into the front of a pickup truck. I saw the look on his face, he looked so scared and he was struggling to turn the wheel. All of a sudden crash. He didn't have his seatbelt on and from the impact of the accident he flew completely across the front seats. His passenger window was down and I'm assuming that he hit his head on the part where the window comes down. I ran over and he was just hanging out of the side of his SUV limp with blood everywhere. I was shaking so bad. I ran in the store and asked the girls to call 911. In the meantime, many people stopped to help. One of the good samaritans was a lady returning from her RN graduation. I went back in the store and got a bunch of towels but he was bleeding so badly they wouldn't have helped. His ear was severed off and he was unconscious. The ambulance came within minutes and the fire company. They had to saw him out of his vehicle. I believe that he had already died by the time they got there b/c the nurse said she couldn't get a pulse. Thank goodness my son didn't see all of that but he did ask me if God was going to come down and help the man. He keeps asking about the man too. It is so hard explaining death to a 4 year old. The driver of the other vehicle did have his seatbelt on and his airbag deployed. He was ok.

I know that most of us (hopefully all of us)do wear our seatbelts but please, please buckle up everytime.

Wow, I'm so sorry you had to witness that. Even driving past an injury crash is unsettling. I can't imagine witnessing it and being one of the 1st on the scene to help.

Oh Dana~I feel so bad for you. I know the feeling of reliving it. I (& hubby) had to do CPR on a woman/friend/neighbor once and I relived it over & over. She DID die. My thoughts & prayers are with you and YES, God helped that man be at peace! My setabelts are always fastened!

Wow. You are incredible, you handled yourself so well and did everything you could to help. This is a great reminder for all of us to buckle up as well as remind all of our loved ones to. Sometimes we just don't realize how mortal we really are. Do you pray with your son??? I would do so for myself and the driver, too, if I were you. God doesn't let anything happen without a reason, and you were meant to be there for a purpose, wether it was to help keep others calm or if it was to test your heart so that God can show you what strength is in it. I am so sorry. I can only pray that the images will go away for you. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dana-How horrible for you to see and how sad for all involved. I always wear my seat belt. 18 months ago I was hit by a speeding drunk driver and spent many months in variuos treatmnts. So I am a firm believer in seat belts. Ya just never know! This is very traumatic for you I am sure. If it doesnt go away soon maybe some Post traumatic stress therapy may help you. I know it takes time to recover from seeing something so horrible. Just wanted you to know there is help out ther if you need it. I am thinking of you.

How awful. Thanks for sharing because this is a good reminder. I am guilty of being lax with my seatbelt sometimes ;(

Very true. I think it is wonderful when people stop and try to help and get the police, fire, ambulance involved. If this man had a fighting chance, it was because of your actions.

I can imagine that this is a hard thing to deal with, especially where you have to find the words to explain to your son. I guess teh best you can do is use it to teach him a lesson about safety, being a good samaritan, etc. These are the lessons that our kids remember. I still tell people about doing this or that b/c "when I was a kid...."

Oh my goodness, Dana. I have a 4-year-old, too. I wouldn't know what I'd say to my child had we been in such a situation. Such a sad story. I'm such a stickler about buckling up. I live in Dallas, where everyone drives 20-30 mph above the speed limit. I'm always apprehensive when I'm on the freeway with my boy. I've been honked at several times, and I was driving 5 mph above the speed limit!

Dana -

I'm so sorry you had to witness this horrible accident. What a terrible tragedy. The way you described it, I wonder if the man was having car problems. You did all you could and should be proud of how you handled yourself and explained it to your son. Who knows, with your reminder, you may have helped someone avoid a similar incident.

Sorry you had to witness something so awful. You did very well in that situation. Better than I did, when a guy standing next to me jumped in front of a moving El train.

I'm so glad your 4 year old didn't see what you saw, but so sorry for what you witnessed. How brave you were. Just another reminder of how quickly everything as we know it can change...

Dana...I don't know what to say to comfort you. How terrible. Thanks you for the reminder to wear our seat belts.

Dana, God bless you for your strength at that time. So, so sad.

Ladies, please remember to buckle up every time. Even if you're just going to the grocery store at the end of your little street. I make no exeptions for myself or any of my family. I've seen too many injuries.

Dana ~

What a horrendous ordeal for you. I haven't read anyone else's posts so it may have already been stated -- I encourage you to get a referral to a support group to talk about what you witnessed. Post traumatic stress can be debilitating and sneak up on you unexpectedly. My stomach is in knots just visualizing the scene. I will pray for the Lord to comfort you and give you peace.

I'm so sorry, Dana. That's just horrible. I agree with Kim--you might want to get some counseling. Or perhaps talk to your priest or minister or rabbi if that's something you'd prefer? For your son, there are some really good books now that explain death in an age-appropriate way and give good advice on how to help children cope with tragedy. Here's a link that has some resources, if you're interested. I know that the fernside.org link also has lists and descriptions of books.

I'm so sorry you had to witness that!
I agree that getting some kind of counseling is a good idea. You're probably suffering from some kind of post-traumatic stress. One of my students had a roommate who tried to commit suicide (ODing on pills) and my student was the one to find her. She was having a hard time for quite a while, then I suggested she talk to someone at the counseling center and she said it really helped a lot. I'm not sure how much your daughter saw of the accident, but she might benefit from some counseling as well.

That is awful.:-( I am really very sorry that you had that experience, but i think you were amazing! not everyone could have done what you did. You are very strong. I know you will never forget it, but it won't always be so vivid. take care
