I think they come in 50 mg pills. I usually take 2 about an hour before bed & another one in the wee hours.

The best thing about it is no hangover--I wake up feeling fairly alert & rested.

Just wanted to second JenG's recommendation for Moon Drops. My husband has insomnia from time to time and he swears by them - they're mint flavored lozenges with homeopathic (i.e., extremely extremely tiny) amounts of herbs in them. I was skeptical but he said they were great. The last time I couldn't sleep I tried one, and it was so odd, as the last of the lozenge dissolved in my mouth I was thinking "This is totally bogus, my brain is still very wound up!" Then, poof, I was asleep. DH says that's how they always work, you don't feel drowsy but you do fall right asleep and sleep well. They're very inexpensive and becuase they're homeopathic there are not large amounts of herbs involved, so they're free of side effects. I love Moon Drops!

Becky,

The cause of this insomnia really would trouble me. That isn't just your average hard time falling asleep!! Keep looking for a cause! What is your doctors opinion on this?

That said, if you do try the Moondrops, please let us know. I sometimes can't fall asleep too well and would like to try these, if effective.

I am always very wary of taking something EVERY night. Even if the product states you will not become dependent, I just don't buy it. Your body needs to know how to fall asleep on it's own.

I really do feel for you. I can't imagine what I would be like with that little sleep. I hope you get some relief soon...

Thank you Janice.

I feel EXACTLY the same way, just don't feel it's healthy to take something every night, and have fought it up until now, but I am at the breaking point. I just don't think I have another night in me to just sit up and stare at the walls !!

Right now I just have my gynocologist who feels that it COULD be perimenopause, but I have my doubts that that is the whole story.
It seems to have started very suddenly without an obvious cause.

I am searching for a new primary care physician- so right now don't have one who is following all of this with me.

It's 10pm and I am leaning hard towards taking a Lunesta , if only to get ONE night's solid sleep. I feel very sleepy right now (took an Estroven PM) but I know once I lay down I will be wide awake.
UGHHHH!!!!

;(

I feel for you Becky, and can I ever relate!

It's 3am, and here I sit.

My problem isn't falling asleep, but staying asleep. Around 2-3am, my eyes pop open and it can take up to 2 hours for me to fall asleep again. I am pretty sure it's peri-meno for me (I turned 50 last Saturday), and it sounds like yours is too.

I've tried Rozerum and it works sometimes, but not always. Simply Sleep works, but it dries me out and I have chapped lips and dry skin for days afterwards. I had a friend recommend the melatonin, so that may be my next step.

Good luck! I hope you get some rest soon... it can be so debilitating to not get your rest.

Jeannemarie,

I had insomnia like that for several years and would wake up at between 2 and 4 and usually end up being up for the day then!
Really frustrating, because I always fell asleep the moment my head touched the pillow but I couldn't stay asleep for anything! (I hope you got back to sleep last night!)

Then suddenly it just became that I couldnt fall asleep either! And no napping in the day. I would be very tired, just sort of lost the ability to normally get sleepy and sleep. If I do doze off watching TV at night , its for under a 1/2 hour and then I am wide awake again!

I did break down and take the Lunesta last night, and THANKFULLY I got 8 hours of solid, uninterrupted sleep!! I may continue that through the weekend and then hope I can get into see a doctor very soon and try to get this figured out. A pharmacist I called said my sleep cycle is all messed up and I probably just need to take Lunesta for 2 or 3 nights and it will return, but I think after all this time it might not be quite so easy.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions . Anyone know if Moondrops can be found in any stores?

Becky, I've also found them at a local health food store, Mother's Market (in Southern California). You might try a health food store, although I know another local health food store does not carry them.

What I find useful to combat the anxiety of not being able to fall asleep as I lie there in the dark and stare at the ceiling is: I put on a book on tape/CD next to the bed, volume quite low indeed. I find that if I concentrate I can hear the story still, but it's not so loud that it stops me from falling asleep. I find the fact that I am not lying there doing nothing and worrying about being able to sleep or not is what allows me to fall asleep. And with the volume that low, when you do fall asleep, the CD will not wake you up again and it will gradually come to an end and stop itself. I find that I listen for maybe 10 minutes and then, I'm off ZZZzzzzzzzzz and have to rewind the entire side of the story and re-listen to it the next day!

Try this after you have worked out very hard at some poiint during the day, had a warm bath shortly before bed, had a milky drink while lying in bed. These work for me. Hope they work for you.

Thank you Diane!

Over the weekend I found the Moondrops at Wild Oats.
I haven't tried them yet because I am taking Lunesta until I can get to my doctor. I just hope he will work with me to try to find out WHY I suddenly can't get sleep no matter what.
If I just stopped taking anything, I wonder how many nights it would take before I could sleep normally, or would I?

I thank everyone who wrote with ideas and suggestions.
I'll let you know what happens once I finally get a new doctor.

I, too, just found Moon Drops over the weekend. Wild Oats in my area carries it but I purchased it at a different health food store that was closer. I tried it Sat. night but I think I'll have to try it a few more times to see if I get results. I've tried different alternative remedies for sleeping and haven't been able to find quite the right one. I hope Moon Drops will be the answer! :)
