Just wanted to second JenG's recommendation for Moon Drops. My husband has insomnia from time to time and he swears by them - they're mint flavored lozenges with homeopathic (i.e., extremely extremely tiny) amounts of herbs in them. I was skeptical but he said they were great. The last time I couldn't sleep I tried one, and it was so odd, as the last of the lozenge dissolved in my mouth I was thinking "This is totally bogus, my brain is still very wound up!" Then, poof, I was asleep. DH says that's how they always work, you don't feel drowsy but you do fall right asleep and sleep well. They're very inexpensive and becuase they're homeopathic there are not large amounts of herbs involved, so they're free of side effects. I love Moon Drops!
