Homemade creative necklace

Just wanted to share this with you all. It's a little elaborate, and took it seems forever to make.

Except for the silver, it is all made from paper and is waterproof, but you wouldn't want to swim in it.

Hi Janie

Love the necklace, very pretty. Would look lovely with a maxi dress in the summer. You should sell them lol.

I have to say, when I saw the title of your thread, I was hesitant to open the thread, seeing what some jewelry hobbyist think of as 'creative' and I think is either fugly or overly elaborate...but I was pleasantly surprised.

Very nice!
And some of my favorite colors!

(I still have exploring paper bead making on my 'to do' list for this summer, but haven't tried it yet).

Very nice Janie! Wow, it's paper? Never heard of this type of jewelry making...very nice job!

That's beautiful, Janie! Will you share how you made it? I'd love to start making jewelry. I imagine it's so much fun! Did you make those beads?

THe first paper beads/jewelry I've seen was at an eco-fair. A woman was selling necklaces and earrings.

One neat thing she did was put a label on indicating where the paper was from (usually magazines, and usually ads: I've since learned that ads are a good place to find color combining ideas, so they naturally would make interesting beads).

Thank you so much for all the compliments. I just might try to sell them later this year. I kinda wanted to see how you all thought about it before trying an adventure like that.

Stephanie, Yes, each bead was made out of paper, usually from old magazines and cut in a triangular fashion. Then I use a cotter pen (I got from my hubby's workshop) and wrapped the paper onto it. I use elmers glue to stick the ends onto itself. I use 2 coats of Mod Podge on it and dry after each coat. I then us Diamond Glaze to finish it off and get a hard surface, plus they don't stick together. You can get more ideas and more information here. paper bead.org Look for Janice Mae's tutorials, she's the best teacher in the world and very creative.

Kathryn, That is such a great idea to label and indicate where the paper is from. Either from magazines or books... Have you made any so far? I know you are busy, but you also are very creative and I would love to see what you do with paper beads.

Update: I went on the paper bead site (paperbeads.org) I told you about and low and behold there were some of my ideas! I couldn't believe my eyes! Check it out.

Have fun!

Wow, Janie. You are flashing me back to Coronado, California - 1979. I made paper beads in Mrs. Pine's art class in 6th grade - we used National Geographics.

I loved that class!

Pretty necklace! :D

Thanks, Janie
Those are really cool ideas. I love it when people take a basic concept and add their own creativity to it. These definitely take the 'paper bead' concept to a more interesting place, IMO.

Wow Suzanne! 1979? I've never even heard of paper beads before! Janie, how do you dry them so they aren't touching any surface...guess I need to go check out the links. It looks like so much fun and I can see how every bead would be diff. Love the pinking shears idea!

Debbie, LOL. That was an interesting place to live during interesting times. I was too young to really take advantage of it unfortunately. But I do remember that art class very clearly. I think that teacher was one of the good ones - very creative and enthusiastic about letting the students try new and different things.
