I just read the label on my skim milk and it has 12 g of sugar! Geez, that is almost as much as ice cream!!! Does soy milk have lower amts of sugar? I like to have a glass of milk as a nighttime snack, but I'm trying to cut down on my sugar intake.
Not all sugar is created equal. Unless you are lactose intolerant, there's nothing wrong with the sugar found naturally occurring in milk. It has a low glycemic index, helps with mineral absorption, and has other benefits.
The total carbs is less. Most ice creams come in at 23 g. of carb and 15 g. of sugars. Soy might not be the best choice because of the estrogens (unless you need more estrogen.) estrogens tend to make a person put on weight. Organic milk has a better lipid profile. I would go with that if you need that snack in the evening.
How can you tell how much of those sugars are added and how much are natural though? Esp in something like milk that is packaged and can easily have stuff added to it. I remember reading somewhere that they added sugars in milk to get kids to drink it, but I could be wrong.
