HIIT

How many times a week is it safe to do? Cardio Supersets, Afterburn, and Athletic Training are all considered metabolic training? I am just a little confused and would like a better understanding. So let's say I wanted to do Afterburn today and 40/20 tomorrow would that be okay?

I could be wrong, but I think the only reason Cathe has cautioned against doing HiiT more than 2x per week related to the high impact, so if you're mixing workouts from the HiiT dvd with her low impact workouts that should be fine (and fun and effective!).

If I'm incorrect in my understanding, I'm sure somebody else can help out.

Instead of doing them back-to-back, I would do yoga or strength training in-between. Balance of stretch, strength and cardio is the best plus rest/recovery days. My suggestion is based on I used to be ACE certified for aerobics.

HIIT requires a longer recovery period than regular cardio so it's recommended that you don't do it two consecutive days. I think it has more to do with the level of intensity than the level of impact. Just like you wouldn't work the same muscle groups with weights two days in a row, neither should you do HIIT two days in a row. I do HIIT once/week. Sometimes twice/week, but never more than that. For your example, I would not do Afterburn and HIIT 40/20 back to back.

I really do appreciate all the feed back ladies. Something to think about. I have come to be believe that everyone is different. What works for someone may not work for some one else. Never know until we try though trial and tribulations is how we find out

I'm confused as well. HIIT is supposed to be short as well as only a few times per week and the Cathe videos are pretty long. So are just parts of Cahte's workouts considered HIIT or the entire video? I have seen some workouts on bodyrock that use intervals and you just do as many of the exercise as you can in 50 seconds then break for 10 seconds then repeat or another workout where you do as many as you can for 1 minute no break and just go onto the next for 30 minutes total. I am under the impression that those workouts you do everyday but those sound like HIIT to me so ??????

Actually I think the body rock type exercises are regular intervals. I remember the "HIIT" in turbo fire used a series of multiple exercises then repeat (4 jacks, 2 burpees, 4 side lunges, 2 jumps, repeat). In that sense, Afterburn with its one exercise at a time seems more like regular intervals. Then again, it kinda seems like my understanding of Tabata (which is HIIT) so I guess I'm still confused.

I have the Turbo Fire Series and everytime I do any of the HIIT dvd's I think there are 3 of them 20min, 25min, and 15min I always feel so spent that I cant not do anymore. They are fantastic and fun! When I do cathe's Afterburn or Cardio Supersets I dont feel that way. Dont get me wrong I am sweating and breathing hard but nothing like Turbo fire. I also work equally as hard when I am doing any of cathe's HIIT.
