high protein

i may be weird but does anyone find they feel yucky eating a lot of protein??? i normally eat between 110-120 grams per day which is roughly 1g/lb of bodyweight. However, today i decided to try to lower my carbs a bit and up my protein. Now i'm sitting at 160 grams for the day and i feel terrible!!! I feel nauseous and heavy; almost like the protein is just remaining undigested. Has anyone felt this way? With all the talk of low carb going around it seems like this is a typical diet for most but i really don't feel good on it. Not to mention i don't have any energy since my carbs were about 120g today.

Yeah! When I upped my intake, I would get really bad stomach aches! So I went back to what I was normally eating, about 55-60 grams, and my stomach felt way happier.

Your normal protein intake sounds really high. What's the recommended daily intake for those who lift weights? I'm thinking I must be WAY under the normal intake.

I think there have been some posts stating info that your body can only handle like 25 grams at a time (per meal/snack). Did you space it out and have it with each eating?

I'm not sure I have gotten that high, but did you also eat different kinds of protein? I do OK when I have 1 scoop of protein powder, some dairy (usually cottage cheese since it is high in protein) or egg whites (I like them with just a few grains of salt), chicken, fish and lean beef/pork, beans are great too. Or quinoa, lentils, etc have quite a bit of protein. I try not to have to much chick/beef/port on a daily basis since it takes so much longer to digest - I like to vary what I have throughout the day.

Just what I have heard and my experiences. Maybe change it up a bit and see how it goes.

I have also read that if you are not lifting really heavy, the a .75:1 to 1:1 ration is fine. Much more than that and you go into ketosis. (I'm not educated in the nutrition field, just have read many posts from those who seem knowledgeable and read articles/books here and there).

Hope some of that helps. Perhaps you can do a search on "protein" and see if some of the posts turn up.

yes, i ate different proteins throughout the day and my meals were spaced. i just don't think my body responds well to the whole high protein low carb thing.

I also feel that way at times. For me, it also makes a difference what type of protein I'm eating. Egg whites, chicken breast, and fish set fine with me. Beef and pork (even the leanest cuts) don't - so I never eat them. Protein powders and drinks really make me feel sick, so I get all of my protein from real food sources.

What's the recommended daily intake for those who lift weights?
Depends on who you ask.
Some say 1 gram per pound of body weight. Other 1 gram per pound of lean weight. Others 1 gram per kilo (2.2 pounds) of body weight. Others anywhere from 15-30% of calories.

I wouldn't worry about being on the low side, unless you have kwashikwor (the disease associated with lack of protein) or have symptoms like wounds not healing.

Many people are getting (much) more protein than they need (though need depends to some extent on the source of that protein: studies at the Max Planck institute in Germany have shown that when protein is cooked, it is only 50% assimilable. In addition animal protein--an already-formed protein--must be broken down into amino acids, then restructured into the proteins needed in our bodies, while plant proteins are already in the form of amino acids that can be used right away).
